16th GRIHA Summit 2024 Kickstarts India’s Push for Climate Action in the Built Environment

The 16th GRIHA Summit 2024, the flagship event of the GRIHA Council, started today in New Delhi with the theme “Accelerating Climate Action in the Built Environment.” The event underlines sustainable urban development as a crucial pillar in addressing climate change and for the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

The event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and sustainability experts as they explored innovative solutions for making construction and infrastructure sectors more climate-resilient at a time when global deadlines for climate commitments are imminent. The summit is such a platform to discuss possible pathways to reduce carbon emissions, tackle rising energy demands, and promote sustainability within the built environment.

This meeting marks some of the milestones where it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the GRIHA Council and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), through which green practices shall be promoted in schools, where KVS schools transform themselves into eco-friendly campuses using the GRIHA rating system for Existing Schools. This will help encourage sustainability habits among students as well as teachers.

The GRIHA Council also launched its newest framework, GRIHA V 6.0, which is market insight-based, with a focus on making green buildings more resource-efficient. It also released the annual Shashwat—Let Nature Be publication focusing on sustainable construction practices. The event also included an exhibition called Sanchay, where sustainable materials and technologies were showcased alongside live models from a national architectural competition.

The summit included an awards ceremony that recognized projects with GRIHA 5-star and 4-star ratings and acknowledged winners of the SHAPE Design Trophy. Sessions on policy advocacy, urban heat management, and biophilic designs underlined actionable strategies for building climate-resilient cities.

The GRIHA Council is India’s first and only comprehensive green building rating system, developed in 2007 by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and TERI. It assesses the environmental impact of buildings in their lifecycle and is set to support India’s objectives under the Paris Agreement.

The summit reflects TERI’s commitment to advancing sustainable development. TERI, a pioneer in the energy and sustainability space for nearly five decades, continues to lead policy research and implement innovative technologies to combat climate change.
