The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has announced that more than 5,000 properties in more than 80 countries have adopted its Hotel Sustainability Basics program. This initiative is an important initiative to promote sustainability in the hospitality industry.
The platform has been adopted across Europe, Africa, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region, with large donations to Japan, the Philippines and India showing its growing influence. Independently certified by Green Key and SGS Assessors, the program provides a 12-step framework aimed at reducing carbon emissions, improving energy and water management and ensuring that the local community from hotel operations. Major hotel brands including Jin Jiang, Louvre Hotels Group, Choice Hotels, Radisson Hotel Group and Accor have implemented the program and set the standard for the industry. In Japan, the Japan Tourism Board has partnered with WTTC to introduce the program nationwide. In the Philippines, Tajara Hospitality Group has partnered with Greenview and WTTC to promote the Basics program through the PhilHost hospitality program. In India, the project has been supported by key industry players such as The Indian Hotels Company Limited, Radisson India and MakeMyTrip. The main program is available in English, French, Spanish and Japanese, for worldwide access.
WTTC President and CEO Julia Simpson concluded that more than 5,000 certified properties demonstrate the industry’s willingness to embrace sustainability, which is important moving forward for the travel sector and tourism.
