Denmark-based investment group A.P. Moller Holding has announced the launch of Vioneo, a new venture dedicated to developing and manufacturing fossil-free plastics aimed at significantly reducing the carbon footprint associated with plastic production. Despite ongoing efforts to improve recycling, fossil fuel-based plastics continue to be a major contributor to pollution, with experts indicating that only about 9% of plastic is recycled annually. Traditional plastics, which are not biodegradable, persist in the environment for extended periods, prompting many governments to implement regulations aimed at reducing the consumption of single-use plastics. To combat these challenges, Vioneo is focusing on biodegradable plastics.
The company has devised a production method for fossil-free polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), both widely used in packaging. By utilizing green methanol as a feedstock, Vioneo plans to produce these materials at scale, ensuring their biodegradability. The production process will be powered by renewable electricity, resulting in a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The end products will be completely fossil-free and certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), making them suitable for a variety of applications, including medical devices, home goods, automotive components, and packaging. Jan Secher, who has been appointed as Chair of the Board of Directors of Vioneo and is the former CEO of Clariant AG and Perstorp Group, emphasized that Vioneo represents a pivotal shift in plastics production. He noted that by adopting advanced technologies and green methanol, the venture addresses key environmental challenges associated with conventional plastics while presenting an opportunity for Europe to lead the decarbonization of the €5 trillion global chemicals and materials sector. Establishing a manufacturing facility and delivery base will require an investment of 1.5 billion euros in equity and debt. A. P. Møller said that the success of the project depends on reforming the legal framework and policies that support a competitive environment for non-toxic plastics, and good practices for the European chemical industry, such as low cost of electricity. In addition, long-term contracts with customers and support from various stakeholders are important for Vioneo’s success. Vioneo’s first facility will be located in Antwerp, Belgium, taking advantage of the region’s strong chemical industry, larger port and access to renewable energy. Alex Hogan, who previously served as commercial director for INEOS Olefins and Polymers, will lead Vioneo as CEO. Jan T Nielsen, investment manager at A.P. Müller emphasized his commitment to promoting low-carbon solutions and emphasized the need for cooperation between stakeholders to ensure the success of the project.
