Amcor’s Sustainability Progress: Recycling and Emissions Cut

Amcor is the world’s leading packaging solutions provider, and the company has delivered some remarkable successes in sustainability and declared 2024 to date as the safest year in its history. More than 94% of Amcor’s flexible packaging portfolio includes a recycle-ready solution, with 95% by weight of rigid packaging portfolio being recyclable at scale, states the company. In addition, Amcor exceeded its pledge to include 10% post-consumer recycled plastic in its packaging and achieved that milestone ahead of a year’s time. The company, altogether, purchased more than 254,000 metric tons of recycled materials for its solutions to meet the packaging needs of its customers, worrying about sustainability.

“For the best, we are going to come,” says Peter Konieczny, Amcor Chief Executive Officer. “We are speaking not just about design but also partnering and figuring out how to be better together.”. “Amcor has led the way in making incredible progress in designing our products to be recyclable and more efficient, but design alone is not enough. Society needs consumer participation and infrastructure development to make circularity real—to make sure used packaging is not left in nature but recycled to become new packaging.” He added that for Amcor, sustainability remains core to the business and drives the company’s purpose and inspires innovation.

In addition, the company has reduced its carbon footprint. The company’s Decarbonization Roadmap, published as part of its long-term sustainability strategy, details how it plans to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Amcor secured approval from the Science Based Targets initiative for both short-term and net zero targets. Amcor reported decreasing absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 9% in FY24 compared with FY23. Moreover, utilization of renewable power is up by 64%, with renewable power making up 14% of the company’s electricity.

“Our commitment is to drive the future of the packaging industry toward a circular society. We are stepping up our advocacy for clear and effective regulations, driving infrastructure investment, and informing customers and consumers,” said David Clark, Chief Sustainability Officer for Amcor.

As the company continues to drive toward a sustainable future, Amcor is committed to researching and developing recyclable packaging, upgrading infrastructure, and collaborating with others in the industry to champion environmental accountability. In this approach, besides packaging no longer being discarded, it will be reinstated in the cycle of production to support the efforts toward circularity by the world in relation to preserving the environment.
