APM Terminals Pipavav (Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd), a gateway port at the heart of Western India has entered into a strategic partnership with CleanMax, one of Asia’s largest renewable energy companies catering exclusively to the Commercial and Industrial (C&I) sector. The partnership, which involves a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), will be an undertaking of a hybrid Wind-Solar Power Project at Gujarat, a reflection of the ongoing efforts by APM Terminals Pipavav to reduce its carbon footprint and support India’s renewable energy ambitions.
This partnership is an important stride toward APM Terminals Pipavav’s goal of becoming a fully net-zero port by 2040. The company aims for a 65 percent reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, based on the 2022 baseline. It is part of its holistic approach to reduce the negative footprint of port operations while achieving sustainable development goals worldwide. This collaboration also makes APM Terminals Pipavav a flag bearer of the port industry to other ports to follow their suits by adopting environmental friendly practices.
The Renewable energy project, which incorporates wind and solar power, will be connected together with an aggregate capacity of 3.50 MW of Wind and 1.06 MWp of Solar under the Third-Party Open Access model. It operated in two phases: first, in January 2022, with a 2 MW capacity of Wind and 0.50 MWp of Solar, and the second was in September 2024, with an additional installation of 1.50 MW of Wind and 0.56 MWp of Solar. The hybrid energy solution is expected to provide about 54 lakh kWh (kilowatt-hour) of electricity per annum that will power port operations in Amreli, Gujarat and help to avoid the emission of about 3,822 metric tonnes of CO2 every year. This equates to more than 2.24 lakh trees planted annually, further proving the green philosophy.
