BYD Signs Landmark 12.5GWh Energy Storage Deal

BYD and SEC sign a historic 12.5GWh energy storage deal, advancing Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals.

BYD Signs Landmark 12.5GWh Energy Storage Deal

BYD Energy Storage and Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) have signed a groundbreaking agreement to develop the world’s largest grid-scale battery energy storage project, totaling 12.5GWh. This historic deal marks a significant milestone in the global energy transition, reinforcing the role of battery energy storage in stabilizing grids and integrating renewable energy sources. With this project, BYD continues to expand its influence in the renewable energy sector, helping nations transition to cleaner and more sustainable power systems.

This agreement builds upon BYD’s earlier 2.6GWh energy storage project with SEC, bringing their total collaboration to 15.1GWh. The new system will be deployed across five key sites in Saudi Arabia, supporting the country’s ambitious energy transformation goals. Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 aims to generate 50% of its electricity from renewable sources, reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing energy security. The large-scale energy storage project will play a crucial role in this transition by addressing power fluctuations caused by variable renewable sources like solar and wind.

Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy push aligns with a broader global shift toward clean energy, and large-scale battery storage is becoming a cornerstone of this transformation. Energy storage solutions help stabilize power grids by ensuring a steady supply of electricity, even when renewable energy generation fluctuates due to weather conditions. This project is expected to enhance grid stability, improve energy efficiency, and support Saudi Arabia’s transition to a more sustainable energy mix.

BYD will supply its MC Cube-T energy storage system (ESS) for the project, featuring its advanced CTS (Cell-to-System) super-integrated technology. The system boasts a Vcts index exceeding 33%, setting a global benchmark for efficiency in large-scale battery storage. The MC Cube-T ESS is designed to optimize energy density, enhance safety, and extend the lifespan of battery storage systems, making it one of the most advanced solutions available in the market.

BYD Energy Storage expressed that in a statement, the project will "redefine the role of electrochemical energy storage solutions in the global energy transition." This project reinforces the company's leadership in the sector as it has been at the forefront of innovation in battery storage.

BYD has been a key player in the energy storage industry for nearly two decades, deploying its first battery energy storage system 17 years ago. Since then, the company has delivered over 75GWh of energy storage solutions across 350 projects in more than 110 countries. Its commitment to innovation and large-scale deployment has positioned it as a global leader in renewable energy storage.

This deal with SEC further strengthens BYD’s presence in the Middle East, a region that is rapidly embracing clean energy solutions. Countries across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are investing in renewable energy projects to diversify their economies and reduce carbon emissions. Saudi Arabia, in particular, has been aggressively pursuing solar and wind energy projects, and energy storage is a critical component of its strategy to ensure a stable and reliable power supply.

The significance of this project extends beyond Saudi Arabia. As nations worldwide accelerate their renewable energy adoption, large-scale energy storage systems like BYD’s will become essential in balancing electricity supply and demand. Energy storage technology enables utilities to store excess renewable energy during peak production periods and release it when demand is high, making renewable power more reliable and cost-effective.

Looking forward, BYD is committed to investing in further R&D in energy storage technologies. The company is eager to strengthen global partnerships to drive the next generation of clean energy solutions. Its expansion in battery energy storage is a testament to its efforts to shape the future of renewable energy and help drive the global transition towards a low-carbon economy.

This historic deal between BYD and SEC is a reflection of the increasing relevance of battery energy storage to the clean energy revolution. In Saudi Arabia's progress towards Vision 2030, such projects will play a key role in forging a sustainable and resilient future for energy. By virtue of its established record of success and drive to innovate, BYD will lead the next phase of large-scale renewable energy storage solutions.
