Cairn Oil & Gas, the business arm of Vedanta Group, said that they have made good progress with their sustainability projects. This saw the saving of 229,000 tonnes of CO2 in the last four years. This saved quantity measures more than 12 million trees. In its last sustainability report, it informed that it saved 119,000 tonnes of CO2 emission during financial year 2024.
Methane Emissions Reduction Commitment
In November, Cairn Oil & Gas became the first oil and gas producer in India to join the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0. It signed a Memorandum of Understanding under this flagship methane reporting and mitigation initiative with a commitment to effectively reducing methane emissions.
Gas Flare Reduction Progress
A sustainability report this year indicated a 60% reduction from four years ago in gas flare volume potential. This part of the methane-emissions curtailment effort was highlighted in this progress in order to align with broader company goals regarding the minimization of impact on the environment and having net-zero carbon emissions in 2030.
Social and Environmental Contributions
Besides its environmental efforts, Cairn Oil & Gas has had a significant impact on social development. The firm’s community programs have allegedly helped transform the lives of 24.9 million people in FY24. It has an overall social impact to 192 million people in the last four years.
Water and Biodiversity Achievements
The report stated that the company achieved net-water positivity, obtaining a Net Positive Water Impact (NPWI) score of 1.15. Cairn surpassed the 2025 target with respect to water reuse/recycle, achieving 82 per cent in FY24. The company also made every effort to ensure ‘no net loss’ of biodiversity through ecosystem conservation and afforestation.
Afforestation
As part of its commitment to carbon sinks creation for carbon sequestration, Cairn Oil & Gas has inked agreements with the state forest departments of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh to plant 1 million trees. This is part of a larger pledge to plant 2 million trees by 2030.
Future Sustainability Goals
The company reaffirmed its commitment toward guiding sustainable practices within the Indian energy industry. In this regard, it intends to produce 50 percent of crude supply for India with robust environmental and social responsibility.
