Cairn Oil & Gas Achieves UN Gold Standard for Methane Reporting
Cairn Oil & Gas, part of Vedanta Group, has achieved UNEP’s Gold Standard Pathway under the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 for the 2025 reporting year. The company has committed to cutting absolute methane emissions by 30% over the next five years and is advancing initiatives such as flare reduction, carbon capture, digital monitoring, and nature-based carbon solutions to support its Net Zero target for 2030. The recognition reinforces Cairn’s position as a major contributor to India’s domestic oil and gas output while strengthening its environmental reporting and methane management practices.
Cairn Oil & Gas, India’s largest private oil painting and gas patron, has attained the ‘Golden Standard Pathway’ under a crucial United Nations methane action. The recognition comes from the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) for the 2025 reporting time.
This status marks the company as the first upstream driver in India to reach this position within the frame. It reflects a vindicated commitment to transparent and accurate reporting of methane emigrations data. OGMP 2.0 is a global reporting and mitigation programme covering over 42 of worldwide oil painting and gas product.
Methane Reduction Commitment
To achieve the gold standard, Cairn established a clear methane reduction target and submitted a detailed perpetration plan. The company has pledged to reduce its absolute methane emigrations by 30 over the coming five times. This forms part of its broader strategy to decarbonise operations.
Cairn joined the UNEP action in 2024, getting the first Indian company in its sector to do so. The OGMP 2.0 frame is decreasingly viewed as the global standard for measuring, reporting, and vindicating methane emigrations. It operates under UNEP’s International Methane Emigrations Observatory.
Progress in Emissions Reduction
The company reports significant progress in emigrations reduction since 2021. It has formerly achieved a 57 reduction in glaring volumes of implicit gas. glaring is a major source of methane emigrations in the assiduity. Cairn is now working towards a Zero Routine Flaring Agenda.
Technical Measures Implemented
Other specialized measures are supporting its methane targets. These include installing recycled gas compressors and ejectors, laying new gas channels, and process optimisation. The deployment of advanced digital results also forms part of the plan.
Operational Presence and Vision
Cairn operates 55 blocks across India and contributes about a quarter of the country’s domestic crude oil painting product. The company has stated a vision to ultimately contribute 50 of India’s domestic hydrocarbon affair. It aims to do this while enforcing sustainable functional practices.
Long-term Climate Goals
Beyond methane, Cairn’s parent company Vedanta Limited has committed to net-zero carbon emigrations by 2050 or sooner. Cairn itself is targeting net-zero operations by 2030. Its strategies include renewable energy integration and carbon prisoner, utilisation, and storehouse (CCUS) systems.

The Gold Standard Pathway recognition underscores a growing assiduity focus on methane, a potent hothouse gas. Accurate dimension and transparent reporting are seen as critical first way for effective reduction. This aligns with global climate pretensions to limit temperature rise.
