Continental Tires: A Greener Future with More Recycled Materials

Continental becomes 100 percent sustainable by the year 2050.
A recent Continental announcement, Germany’s automotive parts manufacturer, signifies taking on something huge; trying to have its tyres become more environmental. The company begins by including recycled polyester fabric taken from PET bottles for the production of tyres so that it is not dependent on new raw materials but has the majority of recycled material in production. This is in a bigger plan for production that will be achieved at 100% sustainability by 2050.

One of the most innovation in this campaign is yarn taken from recycled PET bottles. Under this scheme, Continental would push the proportion of sustainable material in every tyre up by 3%. Every size has up to 15 PET bottles, as stated above. The company launched such innovation in 2021. ContiRe.Tex is the company’s technology that converts plastic bottles into polyester yarn without involving chemicals. Thus, Tyre fabric is produced more sustainably with polyester yarn more powerful and robust than natural polyester.

This technology has been applied by the company in its plants of Portugal and the Czech Republic since 2022. The company now sustains its production by including Germany and France.

All tire applications will be completely replaced from 2030 onwards by the nonsustainable polyester with sustainable polyester, further reducing environmental impact. This is part of Continental’s more general targets for sustainability: more broad use of renewable and recycled resources within tire production. These consist of dandelion rubber, rice husk ash, or recycled rubber.

The company is looking at alternative options in the bio-based and chemically recycled PET streams besides reusing recycled materials to further support its ambition of making 100 percent sustainable tires by 2050.
