COP30 Highlights Urgent Need for Stronger Grids and Energy Storage

At COP30, global leaders discussed the global electricity systems during the High-Level Ministerial Meeting on Grids and Storage. They focused on how to upgrade power grids and build better energy storage as countries shift to clean energy. A new international council was also launched to find global solutions for strengthening electricity networks.

COP30 Climate Champion Dan Ioschpe said that “Governments alone cannot solve the climate crisis. What is negotiated in the COP rooms must be implemented in practice, with more renewable energy, resilient infrastructure and financing reaching where it is most needed. This is the decade of implementation, and grids and energy storage are central elements to ensure efficiency, resilience and integration across all energy systems”.

Gustavo Ataíde from Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy explained that expanding electricity grids and storage is essential as the world becomes more dependent on electricity. He said “Demand is growing faster than grids can expand. There is no transition without transmission”. He also highlighted that Brazil already has one of the world’s largest interconnected power systems with 88% renewable energy but now faces new challenges such as flexibility and managing larger energy loads.

During the event, countries launched the Coordination Council for the Implementation of Grids and Storage, a new international mechanism to speed up action on electricity networks and energy storage. Along with that, Framework for Investable Projects also designed to help countries turn their renewable energy goals into real projects that can attract investment, especially in developing nations.

The CEO of the Global Renewables Alliance, Bruce Douglas said “There is a gap between the investment required and what is being delivered, especially in emerging markets. We need to accelerate investment and embed clear targets into national and regional strategies”.

Participants agreed that expanding electricity grids and storage is extremely important and will continue to be a key focus even after COP30 is over.
