De Nora and Maffei Sarda Join Forces for Green Hydrogen

Sardinia is leveraging green hydrogen to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and decrease carbon emissions, marking a significant step in its decarbonization journey. Green hydrogen is set to play a vital role in sustainable mobility, industrial processes, power generation, and heating across the region.

Green Hydrogen Plant in Ossi

De Nora is a global leader in sustainable technologies. It has partnered with Maffei Sarda Silicati to build a green hydrogen production plant in Ossi, Sardinia. The facility will be fed by a 1.5 MW solar power system to produce 50 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, making it environmentally sustainable from production to delivery.

The generated hydrogen will be mainly consumed by Maffei Sarda Silicati to replace fossil fuels in its industrial activities, such as in the drying of sand. Hydrogen can further be used in other application fields, including transport, heating, and electricity generation.

Technology and Capacity

The project uses a 1 MW De Nora Dragonfly electrolyzer in this design. This is meant for local and modular hydrogen production. This patented system allows the production of hydrogen in an efficient and scalable manner which aligns with the needs of industrial users and local communities.

This proposed plant is expected to be completed by June 2026, and it will substantially contribute to the green energy transition process in Sardinia by reducing CO2 in industrial processes.

Funding and Support

The plan enjoys the support of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan of Italy and support from local authorities. The resources are geared towards supporting the shift to sustainable energy sources in Sardinia, in line with Italy’s strategic direction on renewable energies.

Decarbonization Impact

The adoption of green hydrogen in Sardinia is part of the global push toward net-zero emissions. The region is thus driving both reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and transition towards renewable sources through industrial and energy sector integration.
Collaboration between private companies and public institutions for advancing decarbonization is what this project highlights as well.
