Delhi to Upgrade Weather Forecast System

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced a major upgrade of Delhi’s weather and rain forecasting system in a high-level meeting. The purpose of the update is to improve user comfort and reduce the financial impact of unexpected weather changes. Currently there are 17 automatic weather forecasting centers in Delhi. The minister immediately directed the installation of 50 more systems, and the goal is to reach 100 centers.

These systems provide accurate and timely forecasts according to global standards. Dr. Jitendra Singh, who heads various ministries including the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the PMO, reviewed the nationwide upgrade of weather forecasting systems. He unveiled plans to install three radars and 180 automatic weather forecasting systems in Delhi NCR. Other cities like Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata will also see improvements with additional radar installations.

The minister emphasized that the innovations will extend beyond metro cities to other urban areas with a population of more than 10 lakh, including tier one cities and peripheral areas. IMD is developing its weather forecasting models based on long-term average (LPA) data and plans to install a high-performance computing system with a capacity of 20 petaflops. Dr. Singh praised the IMD for sharing information with district authorities, armed forces and disaster management teams that play a crucial role in disaster risk reduction. The purpose of the innovations is to provide farmers, fishermen and the general public with reliable weather forecasts. Dr. Mrityunjay Mohapatra DG IMD and other senior officials of IMD and Ministry of Earth Sciences attended the meeting.
