EDP Renewables (EDPR) has signed a 20-year agreement with Microsoft to supply 100% of the renewable energy produced by its SolarNova 8 project, the largest solar initiative in Singapore, to the tech giant. This marks the second collaboration between EDPR and Microsoft in Singapore, following a recent partnership in the U.S. for an “Environmental Justice PPA.” SolarNova 8, awarded to EDPR earlier this year as part of Singapore’s SolarNova program, will install up to 200 MW of solar capacity across 1,075 public housing buildings and 101 government-owned buildings. The SolarNova program, launched in 2014, is a government-led initiative to accelerate solar photovoltaic deployment, aiming for at least 2 GW of solar capacity by 2030.
The agreement aligns with Microsoft’s goal of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2025 and becoming carbon negative by 2030. Adrian Anderson, GM of Renewables and Carbon-Free Energy at Microsoft, emphasized the importance of the partnership in driving grid decarbonization efforts across Singapore, the U.S., and Europe. EDP Renewables CEO Miguel Stilwell D’Andrade said the partnership will help accelerate the energy transition and contribute to Singapore’s sustainable goal of achieving 2GWp of solar power by 2030.
