Essar Energy Transition (EET) has announced the launch of EET Hydrogen Power, Europe’s first 100 percent hydrogen power plant to be built at the Stanlow Refinery. The plant is due to become operational in 2027, which will support the UK’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and meet the government’s emissions reduction targets. EET Hydrogen Power will replace the existing boiler units at the Stanlow Refinery, which currently produce around 50 MW of power, with a new plant capable of producing 125 MW of power and 6,000 tonnes of steam per day. This transition is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 740,000 tons per year and support EET Fuels’ goal of reducing emissions by 95% by 2030.
The project will play a crucial role in decarbonizing the HyNet industrial cluster and provide a model for future decarbonization of industry and energy. It is part of EET’s $3 billion investment in energy transition projects in North West England. EET Hydrogen Power operates as an independent entity under EET and procures hydrogen from EET Hydrogen’s production facilities. It also supplies low-carbon electricity to other industrial consumers in the region and supports their efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Tony Fountain, CEO of Essar Energy Transition, said the launch of EET Hydrogen Power demonstrates Essar’s commitment to promoting low carbon energy in the UK. Rob Wallace, chief executive of EET Hydrogen Power, highlighted the project’s role in making Stanlow a low-carbon transition hub and meeting regional emissions reduction targets..
