Electrosteel Castings Sets Up Biogas Plant At Srikalahasthi Works

Electrosteel Castings (ECL), ductile iron pipes and fittings firm, on Monday said that it has established a sustainable waste management biogas plant at its Srikalahasthi Works. The facility can process 500 kg of organic waste daily into 18 cubic meters of renewable biogas, marking a significant achievement in sustainable energy innovation at the plant.

The plant primarily processes kitchen and canteen waste from the plant canteen. Through anaerobic digestion, a process where microorganisms break down organic matter in an oxygen-free environment, generates biogas – a mixture primarily of methane and carbon dioxide – and produces a nutrient-rich digestate, a by-product ideal for use as a natural fertilizer in local agriculture.

S N Goswami, CEO of Electrosteel – Srikalahasthi Works said: “Producing renewable energy is the vital objective of the biogas plant and represents a model for sustainability. It not only addresses the pressing challenge of organic waste disposal but also contributes to a broader vision of environmental safety. This milestone for ECL SW emphasises the potential of collaborative, forward-thinking approaches to waste management, paving the way for a more sustainable future for all.”

With its capacity to process 500 kg of waste daily, the plant generates biogas to support canteen operations, where it will be used primarily for food preparation.

Rajiv Prakash, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, ECL SW, said: “This biogas plant is more than just a facility – it’s a realization of our commitment to a greener future. By turning waste into clean energy, we’re addressing environmental challenges head-on while fostering resilience and self-sufficiency. This is just the beginning. Together, we can turn waste into a resource and ignite a path to sustainability.

The establishment of the biogas plant sets a precedent for the company to build a similar facility in the future to expand its practices of renewable energy as this would help establish a greener approach to their daily activities and eventually ensure a healthy environmental balance.
