Eni and MSC have signed a transformative MoU to drive sustainability and decarbonization in global transport, focusing on low-carbon fuels, circular economy practices, and renewable energy solutions.

Eni and MSC teaming up for intensified efforts towards decarbonization and sustainability

Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Eni company and MSC Group, as it marked significant progress for emissions reduction in the transportation and logistics field around the globe. It marked the expansion of the long-term partnership between Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi and MSC Group President Diego Aponte into new fields, especially into the decarbonization of operations and the development of circular economy practices.

Main areas of cooperation

MoU details a multi-faceted approach to sustainability with opportunities to exploit both parties’ respective strengths to meet key challenges in the energy transition. Among the key focus areas are:

Adoption of Low-Carbon Fuels:

The collaboration will discuss the use of alternative fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), and bio-LNG to power MSC’s logistics and cruise fleets. These low-carbon energy carriers will be critical in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport.
Renewable Energy Solutions for MSC Facilities
Eni and MSC will evaluate renewable energy systems to reduce carbon consumption in MSC sites and facilities worldwide, as part of its commitment to sustainability.

Advances in Logistics and Intermodal Transport:

The two companies will be looking at synergies in logistics services and intermodal transport, driving sustainable practices within MSC’s supply chain operations.Research into agro-industrial biorefining and new transport opportunities for HVO biofuels.
Circular Economy Practices
The MoU promotes the use of renewable and recycled plastics on MSC vessels, better waste management systems, and other circular economy initiatives that will help in reducing environmental impact and sustainable resource use.

Offshore Platforms Decommissioning:

Eni will assist MSC in decommissioning offshore platforms by providing experience in environmentally friendly dismantling processes and reusing resources.

Research and Development:

Both companies will collaborate in joint research and development activities aimed at developing new technologies and solutions for decarbonization, drawing on their mutual experience and capabilities.

Value-Chain Sustainability:

Eni and MSC will be part of the Open-es framework, an open platform to support sustainability along value chains through the sharing of best practices and standardized measures.
What They’re Saying

Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi underscored the role of partnerships in large-scale decarbonization:

There are plenty of parts of our economic and industrial systems where we need to act to reduce emissions, and the only way to get there is by uniting the skills, resources and technologies across a range of stakeholders for a widespread intervention in each of these key areas. This agreement marks the start of our collaboration with MSC in the decarbonisation of transport and cruise services”. MSC is the world leader in the sector, and we are confident that together we will be able to develop and implement decarbonization initiatives that provide an important contribution to the sector and to the reduction of emissions from our transport systems.”

Diego Aponte, MSC Group President, said: “Eni has been an important partner for our sustainability journey.

At MSC, we are committed to a successful energy transition and therefore need partners we can trust and rely on. Eni has been one of these for many years, and this MoU is a welcome and natural evolution of our relationship. We look forward to further close collaboration with Eni in the expansion and evolution of our sustainability and decarbonisation approach across all MSC Group companies.
Operational Meaning of the Merger

The partnership that has resulted from this tie-up couldn’t have occurred at a better time when the pressure on the global transportation industry from emission reduction becomes more insistent and embraces sustainable behaviors. Both Eni and MSC have different capacity strengths through which they could address effective decarbonisation challenges together.

For Eni, this is part of the broader strategy to move forward with the energy transition, through innovation and collaboration with key stakeholders. Eni is a leader in energy solutions, biofuels, renewable energy, and circular economy practices and hence a valuable partner for MSC in its sustainability efforts.

It would be one big stride towards sustainability if MSC would come to act more responsibly. This could be establishing an example of a new standard in the maritime and logistics industry about environmental responsibility.
The Eni-MSC partnership is much more than a business deal; it is a strategic alignment of two industry leaders committed to the great challenge of climate change and sustainability. With the power of combined expertise, resources, and technologies, Eni and MSC are poised to create transformative change in the global transport sector.

Those kind of collaborations will play a bigger role in shaping a more sustainable, resilient future for all as the world seems to increasingly prioritize living sustainable lives, providing a transition into a low-carbon economy.
