Hindustan Zinc, an Indian-based company and one of the global leaders in zinc production, is embarking on a journey to sustainable operations with significant renewable energy in Rajasthan. Collaboration with Serentica Renewables, a local independent leader in the field of renewable energy, shall be of help to Hindustan Zinc in integrating 450 MW of renewable energy into its operations—a no-less-critical milestone toward notably reducing carbon footer.
It was an ambitious project that began with bringing into service a 180 MW solar power plant at Serentica’s Bikaner power park. The facility will develop across 1,200 acres and has a significant contribution to the sustainability initiatives taken by Hindustan Zinc, expected to cut close to 2.7 million tons of CO2 annually once this works to full capacity.
For us at Hindustan Zinc, sustainability is the guiding force for all our strategic decisions. While we aspire to become net zero by 2050, or earlier, this green energy project at Mangalore will not only reduce dependence on fossil fuels but also help pace up our journey towards total decarbonization,” said Arun Misra, CEO, of Hindustan Zinc.
Collaborating with Serentica Renewables exemplifies Vedanta group initiatives in the areas of sustainable mining practices within Hindustan Zinc. Akshay Hiranandani, CEO of Serentica Renewables, referred to the importance it held for the clean energy landscape of India and blue-penciled the fact that the Bikaner facility had been commissioned successfully within expedited time as proof of the commitment to clean energy transformation.
The move is also in line with Hindustan Zinc’s strategic objectives outlined in 2022: to reduce carbon emissions by 50% between now and 2030, including scope 1 and 2, and work towards carbon neutrality by the year 2050. This company showed an absolute reduction of 14% in the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions against the 2020 level in just the last one-year duration due to improved operational efficiencies and the adoption of new technologies.
Looking ahead, Hindustan Zinc and Serentica Renewables plan to further elevate their renewable energy production by establishing the power of wind into their portfolio. This would exemplify a pioneering multi-location hybrid model in India’s renewable sector.
This collaboration thus places Hindustan Zinc at the forefront of the industrial shift towards sustainable practices in India. With the integration of 450 MW of renewables into its system, Hindustan Zinc not only makes operations resilient but also sets global best practices on sustainability in zinc mining. As the world moves towards a greener future, such actions underline the much-needed intervention of collaboration and innovation toward attaining long-term sustainability goals for the environment.
