Germany Hosts 30th Anniversary of UN Convention to Combat Desertification in Bonn
Today, the Federal Republic of Germany welcomed global leaders and advocates to Bonn for Desertification and Drought Day 2024, marking the 30th anniversary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Hosted by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the event gathered stakeholders under the theme "United for Land: Our Legacy. Our Future". In his address, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged collective action, stating, "We must be 'United for Land'. Governments, businesses, academics, communities, and more must come together and act." The event commemorated three decades of the UNCCD, a cornerstone in global efforts for sustainable land management ratified by 196 countries and the European Union. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier underscored the importance of the occasion, emphasizing, "There is nothing more fundamental than good soil, safe food, and clean water. Let's work together to ensure a future that safeguards these essentials." The day featured the announcement of ten "Land Heroes" recognized by the UNCCD for their outstanding contributions to restoring land, enhancing drought resilience, and promoting sustainable agriculture. These young changemakers from across the globe are pivotal in driving innovation and community-led initiatives in land management. In a significant development, a new initiative to empower young negotiators on land and drought issues was unveiled. This program aims to train youth from over 30 countries as future leaders in sustainable land management, ahead of the upcoming UNCCD COP16 in Riyadh this December. Bonn Mayor Katja Dörner inaugurated the city's first "land-friendly" school, highlighting Bonn's commitment to integrating sustainable practices into education through practical lessons in organic farming. The global observance also saw numerous events worldwide, underscoring international solidarity in combating desertification and promoting sustainable land management. From Italy's issuance of a commemorative stamp to Kenya's ambitious tree planting campaign, nations around the world joined in raising awareness and taking action. As discussions continue and preparations intensify for COP16, scheduled for December 2024 in Riyadh, stakeholders are urged to accelerate efforts towards achieving land degradation neutrality and fostering resilience against drought, crucial for the well-being of future generations and the sustainability of our planet.
