Goyal Emphasizes Sustainable Consumption for Reducing Global Carbon Footprint

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the urgent need for sustainable consumption practices to address global environmental challenges during his address at CII’s Partnership Summit. He stressed that shifting consumption patterns toward environmentally sustainable products is essential for mitigating the adverse effects of carbon emissions. The minister underscored the role of consumption demand in driving manufacturing emissions, advocating for efficient management of this demand to achieve sustainability goals.

The minister also pointed out that global environmental damage has primarily been caused by developed countries benefiting from low-cost energy, while nations in the Global South, including India, have not been major contributors. He reiterated that a circular economy and reduced waste from consumption patterns are critical for fostering a sustainable future.

The summit saw participation from senior ministers from partner countries including Italy, Israel, Bhutan, Bahrain, Algeria, Nepal, Senegal, South Africa, Myanmar, Qatar, and Cambodia, all of whom acknowledged shared responsibilities in achieving environmental sustainability. The event also emphasized the potential of technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation in shaping the future of global employment and sustainability practices.

Israel’s Minister of Economy and Industry, M K Nir Barkat, noted the growing economic and trade relations between India and Israel. He highlighted a proposed economic corridor connecting India, the UAE, Israel, and Europe, which aims to further strengthen international economic ties.

Goyal concluded by urging nations to critically evaluate their consumption behaviors and transition to sustainable lifestyles, emphasizing that effective management of resources and waste reduction is crucial for environmental conservation and global well-being.
