Green Hydrogen Cluster Set to Transform Ånge Region

Lhyfe, OX2, and Velarion are announcing a major move toward sustainable industrial development by joining forces to develop a green hydrogen industrial cluster in Ånge municipality, Sweden. This ambitious project aims to capitalize on the renewable energy of wind power to produce green hydrogen, which will be used for the fabrication of carbon-neutral products in the form of green ammonia destined for fertilizer production. The initiative will position Ånge as one of the leading hotspots for green industrial activity in the region.

A Partnership for Sustainability
The collaboration between Lhyfe, OX2, and Velarion brings together players that are vital for the realization of renewable energy solutions and clean, sustainable industries. Lhyfe will lead the hydrogen production process, as one of the largest hydrogen producers globally. OX2, one of the largest onshore wind developers in Europe, will provide the required renewable energy that will power the hydrogen production unit. Velarion, the Ånge-headquartered front-runner in green fertilizer, will use that green hydrogen for the production of carbon-neutral fertilizers, greatly reducing the footprint of fertilizer production.

The green hydrogen cluster shall be established in Grönsta, situated just north of Torpshammar in the municipality of Ånge. This area has a wind farm spread over an extensive area, comprising large-scale wind turbines and a hydrogen production plant-an overall ecosystem for sustainable industrial production.

Wind Power for Green Hydrogen Production
The project will center around an OX2 wind farm in Marktjärn, Torpshammar, which will produce 1.4 TWh of green electricity annually. Said green electricity will turn up the heat in Lhyfe’s hydrogen production unit to as high as 100 tons of green hydrogen in one day. The hydrogen will be produced with the support of approximately 300 MW of electrolysis capacity, which will convert water into hydrogen by using renewable energy.

It employs hydrogen produced with wind power, again the most important part of the sustainability strategy. The project ensures, through wind energy, that the produced hydrogen will be quite green, resulting in less carbon emissions and further renewable energy technologies.

Carbon-Neutral Fertilizers Production
Velarion, the third partner in this project, will develop one of the world’s first carbon-neutral fertilizer plants within the cluster. The plant will convert the green hydrogen from Lhyfe into green ammonia-the key raw material for fertilizer production. Production of fertilizers conventionally accounts for a large part of carbon emissions, while this plant-using green hydrogen-will greatly reduce such carbon footprint and be in line with the growing demand of sustainable farm products.

The establishment of this facility represents a milestone for efforts toward international de-carbonization in agriculture and the production of food in an environmentally friendly way. This is an innovative approach by Velarion, one meant to set new standards for the fertilizer industry and prove the full potential of green hydrogen in industrial applications.

Local Economy Boost and Job Creation
Basically, the green hydrogen industrial cluster will strongly influence the local economy positively in Ånge. The project so far is only conceptual, and for its final approval, “more studies, operating licenses, environmental permits, and financial investment decisions” are needed. However, the creation of additional jobs and growth in this area will have considerable potential, and this cluster is supposed to attract more industrial establishments in this region.

This collaboration by Lhyfe, OX2, and Velarion will also catalyze an entire local ecosystem around green hydrogen. Through the refining of hydrogen and its by-products, with several licensed companies, the partners want to create a sustainable industrial hub that will contribute toward regional economy growth but also contribute to its long-term resilience.

A Green Industrial Future in Prospect
The Ånge green hydrogen industrial cluster represents a perspective for the future, as reflected by a higher priority for sustainability in industrial development. By putting together renewable energy with value-chain-adding hydrogen production and innovative industrial applications, Lhyfe, OX2, and Velarion will lead the path to a sustainable future.

During the project period, Ånge can be in the forefront regarding green industrial development; with it come investment, and as such, this may act as an example for other regions willing to develop green industry. The cooperation is a forward-looking response to the challenges of climate change and scarcity of resources and brings into concrete light the transformative power of green technologies.

This will entail the completion of current studies, acquisition of the necessary permits, and achievement of the respective investments. If realized, however, the green hydrogen Ånge industrial cluster would play a critical role in shaping the future of sustainable industry in Sweden and beyond.
