In the list of giants in the Indian petrochemical sector, Haldia Petrochemicals Limited said, “It was a big day today when it announced its deal with Lummus Technology to commission its upcoming phenol and acetone plant in Haldia, West Bengal.”. Under the deal signed between HPL’s Whole-time Director and CEO Navanit Narayan and Lummus Technology’s Chief Business Officer for Polymers and Petrochemicals Dr. Romain Lemoine, the company would expand its phenol production capacity from 300 kilotons per annum (KTPA) to 345 KTPA. It is an indicator of the company’s commitment to producing more downstream products such as phenol, cumene, and acetone, which are widely in demand throughout the country.
This capability uplifts well with the growth path of HPL and is part of the greenfield investment exceeding INR 4,500 crore in Haldia. Overall, the project has several production facilities, including India’s first on-purpose propylene plant using olefin conversion technology (OCT), offered by Lummus itself. The project is targeted to be ready for commissioning by the end of the first quarter of 2026. HPL plans to augment its production of phenol and acetone as a first step to meet the growing demand for chemicals in India, thereby helping allied sectors grow and contribute to the nation in terms of expansion in the industrial sector.
The license amendment has further reinforced HPL’s production capabilities and placed Lummus Technology at the forefront of pushing to improve India’s chemical infrastructure. It underpins innovation, sustainability, and adopting cutting-edge solutions to effectively meet the market’s demands. HPL is famous for specialty niche chemical offerings and process technologies sourced from top global licensors.
