Hero Future Energies Launches Green Hydrogen Plant in Andhra Pradesh

Hero Future Energies (HFE) has inaugurated a green hydrogen production plant at Rockman Industries, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The Rs 1,000 crore initiative is one of the milestone steps towards India's vision of decarbonising industrial heat and energy grids becoming a reality.

The facility, which blends green hydrogen with Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), is a pathfinder project and has the mission of providing cleaner options for industrial purposes, such as fuel for heating. The facility is a quantum leap for the country's industrial transition to energy because it blends available renewable sources of energy with available fossil fuels in an effort to reduce carbon emissions.

Fitted with a 300 kW Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser, the plant is operated by a 1.1 MWp roof-top solar farm. Solar capacity power installed is used for power utilized during hydrogen generation, and it is capable of co-mixing 10 percent of green hydrogen and LPG or 3 percent of green hydrogen and PNG. The co-mixing is helping industries achieve hydrogen-based product lines without major overhauls of infrastructure.

The green hydrogen plant will have the capability to produce 25 tons per annum of green hydrogen (TPA) and expandable to 54 TPA in the near future. The green hydrogen will be utilized to meet the energy requirements of industries like heating industries, which bear a substantial burden of energy requirement in glass, steel, and petrochemical industries.

Apart from hydrogen production, the project will also tend to have a significant impact on the environment. The plant will cut down CO2 emission by 206 TPA and let out a maximum of 195 TPA of oxygen into the environment, which is in harmony with India's overall climate mission.

The HFE plant also provides employment for 2,000 individuals in the region, generating skilled employment in an industry that is very quickly growing. This green energy investment is one of the state's efforts to be a green energy leader, or, as it is in this instance, green hydrogen, in India.

Its significance is not only in its environmental significance but its economic significance also. Andhra Pradesh also declared ambitious proposals under the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy Policy – 2024 to complete over 160 GW of clean energy capacity during the next five years. Andhra Pradesh also plans for up to USD 119 billion worth of investment mobilization in clean energy projects for the same span of time. With a geographically strategic position along the sea coast, deep sea ports, and an infrastructurally advanced logistics setup, Andhra Pradesh will be at the center for green hydrogen production and export.

The operation of the green hydrogen plant is viewed as a template for other industrial applications in the nation. The energy-intensive industries like glass, steel, petrochemicals, and chemicals can embrace this hydrogen-based technology with little adjustment to their existing infrastructure. This makes green hydrogen a strong contender for India's industrial decarbonization at scale.

Commissioning of the HFE green hydrogen plant also fulfills the state's vision of long-term clean energy as a part of the overall vision SwarnaAndhra@2047, with an objective of propelling the state towards becoming a global leader in green energy by the mid-century.

Besides this green hydrogen project, Andhra Pradesh is equally engaged in tapping its other renewable sources such as wind and solar energy. All these have a massive contribution in helping India reach its climate targets at the national level, particularly under the Paris Agreement, with a vision to go net-zero by 2070. The plant's commissioning marks India's shift toward green power, the nation's growing capability for deploying scalable and sustainable industrial decarbonization technology. With projects such as this in the pipeline, India is becoming a global clean energy world leader.
