Is India’s Food Service Industry Leading the Way in Sustainability?

In India, the food service industry is experiencing radical changes as operators are turning increasingly towards an environmentally friendly location as demanded by customers and an idea endorsed by the government. Besides reducing consumption of plastic, food service companies are looking for locally sourced, organic, seasonal ingredients. Such a shift towards farm-to-table strategies benefits farmers at the local level; in addition, the carbon footprint related to transferring materials over long distances is reduced. The same GlobalData survey reveals that 77 percent of Indian respondents said they would stop buying from brands operating unsustainable or unethical supply chains.

Government policies played an important role in making the adoption of sustainable practices happen quickly across the industry. The Indian government’s ban on single-use plastics is the most significant regulation so far, forcing food service operators to be innovative and adapt alternatives that are more sustainable. Being compliant with this regulation is the way for operators as they want to differentiate themselves in a saturated market.

Many operators are working toward taking measures toward sustainability. However, many challenges exist, and they depend highly on the type of operation as well as the size of these businesses. Resource constraints may severely limit scalability for smaller operators and large costs for green materials and technologies are one of the biggest obstacles. Higher investment in subsidies or incentives would be needed to encourage wider adoption of green initiatives in the industry.

Despite the challenges, the movement toward sustainability reflects a broader commitment to ecological responsibility in India’s food service industry.
