LanzaTech’s CO2 Recycling Tech to Drive India’s Green Energy Push

Carbon recycling technology leader LanzaTech Global has entered into a landmark deal with Jackson Green on the supply of its cutting-edge ethanol technology for NTPC Limited. NTPC Limited is the largest power generation utility in India, gearing closer towards transforming India into a sustainable energy economy where industrial CO2 emissions are no longer a liability but a resource.

The facility, slated for one of NTPC’s power plants in Central India, features LanzaTech’s next-generation bioreactor technology. The technology captures carbon-rich gases from industrial emissions and converts the emissions to ethanol using a proprietary microbe. This way emissions are reduced, and at the same time, the production of sustainable fuels, chemicals, and raw materials going to industry is pursued. With this, the resulting ethanol will be produced with the vision to have a very important role in the generation of consumer articles and sustainable fuels, like renewable diesel and aviation.

One of the most critical sides of this collaboration is the potential impact on reducing CO2 emissions. Developed by Jackson Green and designed and planned by NETRA, this facility, in collaboration with the NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance, is going to diminish 7,300 tons of dim sum every year. This reduction equals the carbon sequestration of about 8,523 acres of forest, showing significant environmental benefits from the project.

LanzaTech’s technology is already used at the Indian Oil Corporation’s refinery in Panipat; it is proven there for similar applications. In the power generation sector, the deal with NTPC is a significant increase in its work currently underway in India. This goes in line with larger objectives to be on course with the country’s ambition to scale up production of green fuels and chemicals—advancing India towards a clean energy transformation.

Jackson Green, a known expert in Power-to-X projects, will be in charge of the entire cycle of work, starting from design to construction in Chhattisgarh, India. The facility is slated to be operational in two years, making a substantial contribution to the local level’s production capabilities and raising India’s capability in the manufacture of sustainable fuels through waste materials. The project also supports the prime minister’s initiative on Make in India to encourage domestic manufacturing of important products and materials in the region using innovative and eco-friendly technologies.

A broad portfolio of clean energy projects by Jackson Green includes the largest green hydrogen fueling station and a low-carbon methanol plant in India, establishing the company as a leader in India’s transition of her energy mix. The project represents the sixth major Power-to-X project by Jackson Green in the last 18 months and further proves its commitment to the cause of sustainable energy in the country.

In addition to projects with NTPC, LanzaTech is developing new projects with other large Indian energy companies, including Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited. These are part of bigger plans to have LanzaTech’s carbon recycling technology spread out to the Indian industry in support of the country’s objectives to cut emissions and decarbonize other sectors of its economy.

The NTPC project will be a milestone in India’s journey into clean energy and will redefine how India will produce carbon capture and utilization. This partnership will not only bring down operations’ environmental impacts by converting waste CO2 into useful ethanol but will also open new frontiers in sustainable industrial production.
