NLC India Limited, a Navratna public corporation under the Ministry of Coal, is celebrating 10 years of renewable energy generation. This milestone marks ten years since the company’s first venture into renewable energy on September 28, 2015, with the installation of a 10 MW solar plant in Newly. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, NLCIL has played a major role. A role in the transformation of India’s power sector In line with the Prime Minister’s vision in 2015 to take India from ‘MW to GW’ of renewable energy, NLCIL is the first of the Central Public Enterprise (CPSE) to generate 1 GW of renewable energy.
This achievement demonstrates NLCIL’s commitment to sustainable energy generation and its significant role in India’s green energy transition. Historically a power producer, NLCIL has ventured into the renewable energy sector with a portfolio of 1,380 MW in solar and 51 MW in wind. So far, this company has produced 1234 crore units of green energy, prevented the emission of 1 crore tonnes of carbon dioxide and contributed significantly to the improvement of air quality and life of the island Looking ahead, NLCIL has a corporate plan that envisages 10,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
To achieve this goal, the company has created two subsidiaries: NLC India Renewables Ltd (NIRL) for asset management; Monetization, and NLC India Green Energy Ltd (NIGEL), to spearhead clean energy initiatives. In addition, NLCIL’s membership of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) demonstrates their commitment to sustainability, even in traditional coal operations. Under the leadership of Union Minister for Coal and Mines, J Kishan Reddy, NLCIL is at the forefront of innovation.
The company promotes projects in solar and wind energy, energy storage systems, green hydrogen and pumped storage projects. He is also exploring new projects such as converting lignite to methanol, converting coal mines to sand and prospecting for precious minerals. With the current renewable energy capacity of 1.4 GW, NLCIL plans to expand this capacity to 10 GW by 2030. Projects are underway in various countries including Newly, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Assam. Recently, on 28 August 2024, NLCIL signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with Telangana DISCOMs for 200 MW of solar power under the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) scheme, indicating another important step in his journey. NLCIL remains dedicated to contributing to India’s goal of reaching 2070, in line with the country’s vision for an ambitious and sustainable future.
