NTPC’s Green Hydrogen Project to Boost Odisha’s Clean Energy Transition

NTPC in association with GRIDCO and CRUT, has been promoting the green hydrogen mobility drive in Odisha.
This included signing into the very first MoU agreement with one of the state-owned power giants, NTPC. Additionally, it signed this memorandum of understanding with GRIDCO-the energy undertaking of the government of Odisha and CRUT, the state government’s public transit agency that aspires to set up green hydrogen infrastructure in Odisha. It signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday-whose agenda is facilitating green energy technology toward green hydrogen mobility within this region.

This is one step ahead for green hydrogen to be considered as an alternate fuel in the transport sector of Odisha and further enhancement of efforts to reduce the carbon footprint and enhance energy security. NTPC will also establish a green hydrogen refueling station at Bhubaneswar, to fuel hydrogen buses on short-distance as well as long-distance routes under this pact.

The plan is expected to provide options for fossil-fuel-based buses, therefore, the state would have a chance toward cleaner and greener alternatives in the energy solution. So the aim of the usage of hydrogen-based buses over traditional ones is to reduce the carbon consumption of the public transportation section of the state toward sustainable mobility.

This project, partly, has been sponsored by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy that helped build up the green hydrogen infrastructure of Bhubaneswar. The newly-built hydrogen fuelling station is supposed to power not just the hydrogen buses but is also going to be part of the infrastructure that could help green hydrogen technology burgeoning in the state.

NTPC has been pretty much an active participant in green hydrogen projects and, based on the green hydrogen blending project that it has recently established in Surat over two years back, it had useful experience in the filed. This kind of initiative for mobility has also been undertaken by the company at Leh, Greater Noida, and Kandla in Gujarat. These projects are part of an all-inclusive drive by NTPC toward making green hydrogen a suitable alternative for a clean fuel option to meet the consumption requirements of the industrial and transportation sector in the world. In addition to the above-mentioned hydrogen mobility in Bhubaneswar, NTPC is currently working on major projects for green hydrogen. This includes developing a green hydrogen hub in Visakhapatnam and the expansion by NTPC with renewable energy capacity aimed to take up renewable energy capacity up to 60 GW in the year 2032. This way, NTPC will be at the heart of the India transition into the greener and cleaner future of energy.

The use of green hydrogen mobility in Odisha will go hand-in-hand with efforts that are aimed at popularizing clean energy in the state as well as efforts toward finding solutions in transport in a greener way. Hydrogen utilization as fuel for public transport buses by Odisha will decrease its reliance on fossil fuel, thus air pollution, reduce carbon emissions through the means of transport. Hydrogen mobility projects, such as the one to be discussed, will support the global approach to decarbonization and sustainable development. Green hydrogen technology can be included in the national climate targets that are in support of international climate goals that have been agreed on under the Paris Agreement.

The alliance of NTPC with GRIDCO and CRUT is one of the steps taken by the public sector of India to expedite the incorporation of green technology into the transport, energy-generating, and industrial manufacturing sectors. Support for renewable energy and clean fuel technology will be crucial for the government towards reaching the country’s set target for climate change as well as improving energy security. Therefore, this makes green hydrogen mobility in Odisha yet another movement to be emulated. As awareness on the changeable climate and reducing dependence on fossil fuels gains momentum, various states of the Indian subcontinent come forward in a bid to find ways that would allow it to shift its dependence to green sources of energy, in this instance, hydrogen.

Conclusion:In that regard, this project shall develop into NTPC and GRIDCO-CRUT collaboration that opens avenues towards making transportation more sustainable in the State of Odisha. Success in Bhubaneswar will replicate this hydrogen-bus success to all parts of the state and across the country in aid of a country seeking objectives of sustainability in urban mobility. As NTPC commits to green hydrogen and renewable energy, no doubt it would play a leadership position in India’s future of new clean energy. Developing its own green hydrogen infrastructure and ramping up renewable energy capacity would be one step toward bigger efforts by India toward climate change mitigation and a more sustainable low-carbon economy.
