One Click LCA Acquires ENVI-met to Combat Urban Heat

One Click LCA, a company specializing in software for tracking and reducing carbon footprints in construction and manufacturing, has acquired ENVI-met, a leader in microclimate simulation software. This acquisition will allow One Click LCA to enhance its life cycle assessment (LCA) platform by integrating ENVI-met’s advanced microclimate simulation technology. The merger aims to provide architects, builders, urban planners, and manufacturers with more sophisticated tools to assess the environmental impact of construction projects, while also addressing climate resilience. ENVI-met’s software offers 3D modeling capabilities that simulate the interaction of buildings, materials, and vegetation with natural elements like wind and sunlight.

This technology, grounded in over two decades of research, helps urban planners make informed choices to reduce the “urban heat island” effect, a growing concern where cities retain heat due to materials like asphalt and concrete. According to the United Nations Environment Program, cities are heating up at twice the global rate, creating serious health, economic, and environmental challenges. By 2050, 1.6 billion urban dwellers are expected to face extreme heat, and in the U.S. alone, the economic impact of extreme heat could rise from $100 billion to $500 billion annually by mid-century. Panu Pasanen, CEO and Founder of One Click LCA, highlighted the importance of the acquisition, noting that the integration of ENVI-met’s tools will provide clients with the ability to create more sustainable, resilient, and healthier urban environments. Daniela Bruse, CEO and Co-founder of ENVI-met, echoed this sentiment, stating that the combined platforms will set new standards in sustainable urban planning by improving thermal comfort and reducing both urban heat and carbon footprints. With One Click LCA already in use across 170 countries, the addition of ENVI-met’s technology will expand its reach and functionality. The platform, which includes a comprehensive database of data points and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), is designed to help professionals in the construction value chain to demystify their projects and comply with international regulations . This purchase is an important step towards managing climate change through better urban planning and building practices.
