Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the second section of the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro on 16 September 2024. This new section of the metro is expected to significantly reduce the travel time between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar to less than 45 minutes. This is much more convenient compared to an hour and a half road trip in high traffic. The expansion is part of Gujarat’s ambitious goal of building a larger urban transport network. By connecting the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), the rail network and the upcoming bullet train project, the metro system will provide passengers with a seamless and reliable travel experience. In Ahmedabad, BRTS serves 1.75 million passengers per day and integration with Metro will increase its reach. The second phase will connect the existing Phase-I line from Gyaspur to Motera to Gandhinagar with better passenger comfort. Pushkar Singla, General Manager (Regional Planning) of Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), emphasized the importance of this development.
He explained that the Prime Minister will inaugurate the metro train from Sector-1 going to GIFT city and this new phase will be smoothly connected with the first phase of the project. He also said that different types of vehicles will be connected. Commuters from areas like Ranip, Vadaj, and AEC will be able to easily transfer from the BRTS to the metro, while stations like Gandhigram, Kalupur, and Sabarmati will serve as key interchanges with the railway and future bullet train services. This metro expansion not only promises to improve daily commuting but also represents a step toward more sustainable urban development. The introduction of modern AC coaches and infrastructure will offer a cost-effective, hassle-free, and eco-friendly transport alternative for thousands of people, including office workers, students, and tourists. Commuters have already praised the metro for its convenience and comfort, highlighting the time saved and the ease of travel, especially in comparison to traditional bus or auto-rickshaw options. As Gujarat continues to push for sustainable urban growth, the metro system stands as a key component of this green initiative, offering a modern solution to traffic congestion and pollution.
