Prayagraj Railway Operates 700 Trains For Mauni Amavasya
Prayagraj Railway operates over 700 trains to ensure smooth travel for 20 lakh devotees during Mauni Amavasya.

The Mauni Amavasya festival at the Mahakumbh, one of the most significant events of faith and devotion, witnessed an overwhelming turnout of over 8 crore pilgrims taking a holy dip at the sacred Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj. As the flow of devotees continued into the second day, about 2 crore pilgrims bathed on January 30, marking a grand conclusion to the festivities. To this immense influx of devotees, the Prayagraj Railway Division marked a new benchmark in crowd management by successfully running more than 700 trains in only two days, including over 400 Mela Special trains, ensuring the safe and smooth return of more than 20 lakh devotees.
The unparalleled efforts of the Prayagraj Railway Division ensured seamless travel and efficient crowd control during one of the most challenging periods for rail operations. On January 29, over 400 Mela Special trains were deployed to transport pilgrims from various stations across the city. The following day, an additional 300 trains, including around 175 special trains, were operated. This impressive achievement of running over 700 trains in two days set the record for the division as its hallmark of commitment to safe and efficient rail services during large religious events.
Most of the trains were run from Prayagraj Junction, which acted as the central hub for efficient management of the crowd. Apart from that, special trains ran from major stations such as Naini, Chheoki, Subedarganj (NCR), Prayag, Phaphamau (NR), Rambagh, and Jhunsi stations under the Northeast Railway. The wide network also ensured that devotees from each corner would reach the train services without jamming or chaos.
A well-planned and strategic approach was taken to manage the unprecedented number of pilgrims at railway stations. The Prayagraj Railway Administration set up designated holding areas and implemented a color-coded shelter system to guide devotees to their respective trains efficiently. Color-coded tickets were issued to pilgrims, which corresponded to specific shelters and boarding areas, ensuring an organized boarding process. This innovative approach significantly minimized congestion and confusion at the stations.
To further enhance passenger convenience and safety, the railway administration ensured the availability of essential amenities such as healthcare services, drinking water, and clean toilet facilities at all major stations. These measures were instrumental in providing a comfortable and safe travel experience for the devotees, many of whom had traveled long distances to participate in the sacred festivities.
Crowd Management and Effective Control at All Times Senior officials from the railways made sure everything runs smoothly, with effective crowd management throughout the festival. They managed passenger movements from a main control room and strategically located watch towers at designated areas. This hands-on approach and style helped officials to instantaneously remove potential bottlenecks to maintain order when people travel at their peak time.
The Mauni Amavasya festival is said to be the most sacred day of the Mahakumbh. It's considered a sacred day for spiritualists as this day is very significant for all the devotees. The mythological Triveni Sangam, where Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati converge, becomes the epicenter for spiritualists. Pilgrims believe that they will be forgiven of all sins and will gain salvation if they take a holy dip on this day. The gathering this year was unprecedented, with 8 crore devotees taking the holy dip on the first day and another 2 crore on the second day.
The Prayagraj Railway Division has set a benchmark for efficient crowd management and rail operations during large-scale religious events with its exemplary efforts during the Mauni Amavasya festival. Prayagraj Railway was appreciated both by the ardent devotees and railway officials alike for meticulous planning, effortless execution, and an unwavering commitment towards ensuring the safety of passengers. Through the operation of over 700 trains successfully, and a safe return of over 20 lakh pilgrims, Prayagraj Railway has proved to handle massive crowds and maintain top-of-the-line standards of service and safety.
As the Mauni Amavasya festivities concluded, the devotion and faith of millions of pilgrims were matched by the dedication and hard work of the railway officials and staff. The Prayagraj Railway Division's historic achievement in operating a record number of trains and facilitating the safe journey of lakhs of devotees stood as testament to its commitment towards the comfort of one of the most significant religious events in the country.
