One of the biggest, 20-year renewable PPAs signed with Boralex will power Saint-Gobain’s operations in France with the power generated by both wind and solar energy. Through this partnership, Saint-Gobain is going to continue toward its decarbonization plan and, thus, support its sustainability goal with a constant supply of renewable energy.
Under the terms of the agreement, Boralex will develop and provide energy from two solar power plants and one wind farm, all of which should be operational between early 2026 and early 2027. Combined annual output from these facilities will be approximately 110 GWh, sufficient to cover some 10% of the electricity needed for Saint-Gobain’s French industrial operations. This is a significant step in the direction of Saint-Gobain’s commitment to the contribution of a cleaner energy grid and reduction of its carbon footprint in support of broader environmental commitments.
This long-term partnership is an important step toward the development of the group’s strategy for French energy transition,” said Claire Pedini, SG’s senior vice-president of human resources and corporate social responsibility. “Not only will this long-term renewable supply support our industrial sites across France as they move towards cleaner energy systems,” added Pedini.
This particular configuration of wind and solar technologies offers the best capability to deliver stable supplies of renewable energy, such as explained by the firms. Because wind and solar energy are essentially complementary, the industrial operations of the firms in France will be fueled by a more constant supply of power that depends less on fossil fuels, and fluctuations related to energy availability will be reduced. The integration of these two renewable sources is expected to further strengthen the resiliency of the company’s energy supply furthering its ESG objectives.
Nicolas Wolff, executive VP and general manager for Europe at Boralex, said, ‘We are delighted to welcome Saint-Gobain as a partner with whom we will work together, thanks to this deal, reflecting Boralex’s ability to deliver tailor-made energy solutions through our diversified portfolio of wind and solar assets. We hope that this PPA for the next two decades will ensure Saint-Gobain competitive, sustainable power generation while actively supporting the ongoing energy transition in France.”.
This agreement constitutes another important step in Saint-Gobain’s broader roadmap of sustainability, further underscoring its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to help France power itself with renewable energy. These commitments to long-term sustainability will make Saint-Gobain and Boralex take many strides toward achieving not only the former’s sustainable nature but also the rest of the world movement into clean energy.
