Salesforce Says It Will Invest Significantly on Climate to Hasten the Just Energy Transition
With three major climate initiatives under its belt, Salesforce hopes to expedite the just energy transition. The internet behemoth has pledged to fund a number of innovative initiatives that highlight its commitment to lowering carbon emissions and promoting environmental sustainability.
Frontier’s Commitment to Carbon Removal
Salesforce has become a part of Frontier, an advance market commitment (AMC) programme aimed at purchasing over $1 billion worth of permanent carbon reduction by 2030 through collective purchasing power. Salesforce has committed to contributing $25 million towards the advancement and marketing of innovative carbon removal technology as part of this endeavour. This pledge aligns with Salesforce’s overarching objective, which was originally made in May 2022 when it became a founding member of the First Movers Coalition (FMC), to procure $100 million in carbon dioxide (CO₂) removal solutions.
Salesforce’s $25 million investment will be facilitated by Frontier’s knowledgeable team, which will concentrate on early-stage businesses that provide long-term carbon storage solutions. These technologies seek to avoid competition for arable land, achieve affordability at scale, and store carbon for more than a millennium. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicts that in order to fulfil the climate targets of 2050, the world must remove billions of tonnes of carbon yearly; however, at the moment, permanent removals of carbon are only in the tens of thousands of tonnes. This makes the investment crucial.
Portfolio Expansion for Renewable Energy with Qualitas Energy
Salesforce has partnered with Qualitas Energy, a leading global provider of investment, management, and development services for renewable energy, in an effort to strengthen its renewable energy capabilities. Salesforce has signed its first virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) in Europe with this deal, which comprises a 27 megawatt (MW) solar property in Italy.
Six Italian areas will be covered by the 15-year VPPA, which will produce enough electricity yearly to power over 4,200 houses and reduce CO2 emissions by over 21,500 metric tonnes. By 2024 or early 2025, the projects should be up and running. Furthermore, Qualitas Energy is going to provide roughly EUR 400,000 to a community fund that will assist NGOs and municipal programmes that address community needs including requalification of urban trees and the revitalization of parks, green spaces, and bike lanes.
Charitable Contributions to Promote Clean Energy Solutions
Salesforce also revealed that it will be giving $7 organisations that are devoted to developing clean energy solutions $3.95 million in new, unrestricted philanthropy contributions. RE-volv, Groundswell, GRID Alternatives, Planet Reimagined, Working Power, Honnold Foundation, and Evergreen Climate Innovations are among the recipients of the grants. These groups are committed to fostering early-stage climate entrepreneurs, generating green jobs, and lowering the cost of sustainable energy for underserved populations.
The beneficiary organisations will be able to grow their initiatives, come up with fresh ideas, and get more financing thanks to these funds. With Salesforce’s assistance, these NGOs will be able to test out bold ideas, reach a wider audience, and have a substantial impact on the shift to clean energy.
Why It Matters
Reducing emissions by alone won’t be enough to avert the worst effects of climate change and achieve crucial climate targets for a 1.5-degree future. The oceans and atmosphere currently contain large levels of CO2, which has to be eliminated. Investments from the public and commercial sectors are necessary to scale and implement clean energy technology and assist the organisations spearheading the clean energy transition.
Salesforce is committed to fostering a sustainable future where all communities may prosper economically and environmentally, as evidenced by its all-encompassing strategy, which includes funding carbon removal projects, increasing the use of renewable energy, and aiding clean energy NGOs.
