New Delhi, India. Scalene Coffee Research Organisation, a major organization and one of the companies held under the Organisation De Scalene Foundation, that is respected for its inventions of technological sustainability, unveiled its novel invention called COPTERS, which is a kind of Coffee Pulping Water Recovery System, meant for drastically reducing water loss during the pulping of coffee at almost 90 percent through the recovery process.
This expansion has arisen with serious environmental issues thrown up for the coffee industry, most particularly the amounts of water consumed and also the disposal of waste through pulping. Conventional methods require a whopping 20,000 liters to yield one kilogram quality parchment, while COPTERS defies conventional standards with an unprecedented 500 milliliters of clean coffee per kilogram. Such important decrease serves both sustainability and economic aspects, answering a promising solution for the efficiency of coffee production throughout the world.
The core innovation of COPTERS rests on advanced fine particle shortwave dissociation technology that purifies and treats the wastewater obtained from pulping, eliminating impurities at elemental level to be reused safely. It will process large volumes of effluent, thus furthering regulatory compliance and establishing a circular water economy. Apart from conserving water, COPTERS also creates byproducts that are highly rich in bio-nutrients, which can supplement soil fertility for coffee crops. This will not only reduce the environmental footprint but also create an opportunity to obtain carbon credits to advance the global carbon mitigation.
Dr. Rajah Vijay Kumar, chairman, Organisation De Scalene Foundation, said he is very proud of this achievement. “This innovation brings in the end of water wastage in coffee production.” “I think our team has solved one of the oldest problems in wet processing of coffee. Now you need not be guilty of destroying 145 liters of water for every cup of coffee you drink.”. This technology is developed for the world of coffee; it will be made available to all coffee farmers across the globe. We have to save our heaven for the ones to come,” he said.
The COPTER System, which was introduced at Bagavathi Estate in Kodagu district for the first time in the harvest season 2023-24, has already seen excellent results. Embracing the zero liquid discharge framework, generating water credits, and significantly lowering the cost of operational expenses, COPTERS ensures that growers profit through resource conservation. Among these benefits, with lower total cost of ownership and increasing farmer incomes, there lies an economically responsible yet environmental solution to reforming the coffee production.
