Swire Properties, one of Hong Kong’s and Mainland China’s leading property developers, is celebrating the third anniversary of its Green Performance Pledge. With over 100 businesses participating in this commitment across Taikoo Place, Pacific Place, and Citygate, the initiative has received excellent reception from the business community in its mission to promote good environmental practices among responsible office tenants.
Businesses participating in the GPP have achieved substantial environmental successes. Combined, they have saved nearly 750,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity—enough to power 227 average households in Hong Kong for a year. In addition, because of the Program, over 200 tonnes of waste were diverted from landfills through the effective programs of re-use and recycling. These were achieved through smart meters and new waste management solutions for monitoring and improving tenants’ environmental performance.
Close coordination between landlords and tenants in pursuit of sustainability goals lies at the heart of GPP. To date, more than 50% of office space in Swire Properties’ Hong Kong buildings have GPP coverage. This represents new tenants at Six Pacific Place and most tenants at Two Taikoo Place. Its success in Hong Kong has also provided opportunities for it to break into the Mainland China, thereby expanding its reach regionally.
Swire Properties hosted a one-of-a-kind event, attended by over 170 guests, to celebrate the third anniversary of GPP. The event recognized different businesses that had demonstrated excellent contributions toward making the world sustainable. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Greater Bay Airlines, Kennedys, LVMH Fragrance Brands, Securities and Futures Commission, and Veolia were recognized among the best with magnificent sustainable office practices. Swire Coca-Cola Limited was also crowned with the award in appreciation of its innovative office design.
Apart from the award winners at the top, other companies were commended with respect to energy-saving, reduction of waste, and improvement in overall environmental performance. Companies in this list included Atlas Air and Polar Air Cargo, CITIC CLSA, Crédit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, Greater Bay Airlines, HKT, LVMH Fragrance Brands, NetApp (Hong Kong) Limited, PAG, The Executive Centre, and Triton International Limited.
The GPP embodies Swire Properties’ leadership in driving collective change across the commercial real estate industry. It has already more than exceeded its 2025 goal for 50% of its office tenants in Hong Kong and Mainland China to join the GPP, marking the program’s monumental success toward building a culture of sustainability within the corporate community.
Looking ahead, Swire Properties will continue to take its GPP forward by utilizing new technologies and innovations to provide tenants with advanced analytics capabilities for performance benchmarking and greater insights in order to set and strive for their respective sustainability goals. This proactive initiative shall ensure that the GPP continues to drive improvements in energy efficiency, waste management, and water conservation.
The Green Performance Pledge serves as a great knowledge-sharing platform for companies to share the best practices and hence amplifies the collective effect on the environment by many folds. As Swire Properties continues to grow the GPP, fleshing it out further, the company is sure to do a lot more for the international movement on sustainability.
