Tamil Nadu has signed an MoU to develop V.O. Chidambaranar Port as a major green hydrogen shipping and logistics hub, supporting India's clean energy ambitions and future hydrogen exports.
Tamil Nadu has taken a significant step toward establishing a green hydrogen shipping and logistics hub that has implications worldwide with a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) pledging to leverage the V.O. Chidambaranar Port as a key global hub for green hydrogen shipping and logistics.
The MoU signed by the port authority and relevant maritime and energy industry players targets green hydrogen handling, storage, and exporting as a specialised business at the port to attract green energy producers and meet growing global demand for clean fuels.
According to officials the agreement is an important milestone in establishing the value chain of green hydrogen and its derivative products like green ammonia and synthetic fuels. That involves establishing plans for dedicated berths, cold-chain facilities, specific storage spaces and customs liberalising logistics arrangements to facilitate efficient movement of hydrogen cargo.
Green hydrogen — generated by splitting water with renewables — has emerged as a key component of the future clean energy landscape, which will play a major role in decarbonising heavy industry, maritime transport and storing energy for long duration. As the world's markets grow, strategic logistics hubs will facilitate trade and enlarge scalable and cost-efficient chains.
The MoU's signatories stated that the project would help India meet its decarbonisation efforts and boost its export prospect of local green hydrogen production resulting in new jobs and investment opportunities. The integration of green hydrogen infrastructure into existing port operations should help to make the region more competitive and serve as the attraction for international partnerships.
The development plans for the ports involve technical feasibility studies, environmental evaluations and adaptation of the construction program within the framework of designing phases taking into account the renewable power producers, hydrogen generators and the end-users of the fuel. The development will also support the objectives of India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position the country as a major producer, user, and exporter of green hydrogen through policy supports and the provision of capital investment to enable the growth of Hydrogen to build infrastructure for larger scale projects.
The development was welcomed by the industry experts who noted that V.O. Chidambaranar Port, strategically sited as an export hub, will benefit India in catching emerging opportunities in the future energy markets, which are expected to see a significant rise in demand for it in Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
