Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited, the electricity supply company for the 7 million citizens of North Delhi, has been awarded the highly sought after “International Smart Grids Action Network (ISGAN) Award of Excellence 2024” recently for its project “Enhancing Grid Resilience through End-User Behavioural Demand Response.” The ESRC-Award further puts Tata Power-DDL at the forefront in matters of grid flexibility and resilience.
The awardgiving ceremony was held on 2nd October, 2024 at Foz Du Iguaçu, Brazil at the Fifteenth Clean Energy Ministerial Meeting (CEM15/MI-9). Tata Power-DDL’s project received an “Honorable Mention” in recognition for its innovative approach toward building resilience in the grid. It was one of the most distinguished choices from among the nominations worldwide selected by the experts and GSEF. ISGAN Awards of Excellence are awarded to projects within the smart grid class, which become innovative and encourage leadership. They promote the sharing of best practices in energy distribution across the globe.
The Tata Power-DDL Behavioral Demand Response program is a pioneering initiative set up to reduce high demand for electricity at peak periods by engaging customers in improving their energy use management. Introduced as a pilot in FY22, BDR motivates both residential and commercial customers to reduce consumption during peak periods. The initiative was initiated with 2,000 consumers and has resulted in an aggregate reduction of 7.69 MW. Based on the savings realised, Tata Power-DDL expanded the initiative to over 100,000 consumers by FY25, cumulatively reducing the grid load by 1,052 MW over four years. In addition, the program brought about environmental sustainability because it reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 1,662 tons, an impact equivalent to preserving 63,120 trees.
Tata Power-DDL attains its objective of saving energy in the midst of smart metering, real-time data, and customer-centric reach. The company thus builds a forum on sustainable usage of energy, a potential resource which environmentally conscious consumers can contribute meaningfully towards grid stability and climate initiatives. “We are proud to have gained international recognition,” said Mr. Gajanan S. Kale, Tata Power-DDL CEO. “The company has been driven by the sheer desire to implement quality and resilience into the grid, as this happens to shift inwards of energy demand towards renewable sources.”.
This result proved that the notion of BDR between utility providers and customers bears much potential towards creating a sustainable energy future. With this award, Tata Power-DDL hopes to inspire others to develop similar programs in markets and countries around the world, emphasizing the importance of innovative solutions toward creating resilient, friendly environments.
