Viatris Expands Health Initiatives Across India in 2023

Viatris has impacted communities in India through various health, educational, and welfare initiatives working towards the betterment of life. In 2023, the company continued supporting the program Akshaya Vidya, an education program that provides evening classes to disadvantaged children at 40 sites, ensuring continued education. A development activity conducted on a watershed in Ranga Reddy District further enhanced groundwater resources and agricultural productivity through resilience developed among local farmers. Viatris partnered with Hyderabad-based Sportz Village Foundation to work towards fitness among children, allowing them to lead healthy lifestyles, bring positive changes in attendance at schools, and encourage sports.

Viatris is working with Tata Memorial Centre to bring the Access to Affordable Cancer Care program on India’s rising burden of cancer, which exceeds a million fresh cases every year. This initiative has screened over 8 million people for oral cancer and provided specialized training to thousands of healthcare professionals so that they can do effective early detection and management of cancer in communities. It has expanded from six districts to all 34 districts of Maharashtra and extends into six additional states.

The company sponsors the Healthy Liver Healthy Delhi program, which is working to address the rising incidence of liver diseases. With a novel mobile unit providing free screenings for hepatitis B and C, the program has screened over 30,000 patients since its inception in 2017.

Viatris will also promote eco-friendly farming among India’s small farmers which are plagued by chemical fertilisers and climate change. A pilot project in collaboration with Adarsha Rural Health and Economic Development Society at Anneswara Gramapanchayath would run workshops for farmers in the field of organic farming, develop market infrastructure, and provide grants to farmers to promote organic farming.

The company is also working on the tuberculosis crisis.India alone contributes to nearly a quarter of cases in the world. It has partnered with Society For Education Action Research in Community Health (SEARCH) and Doctors For You (DFY).Viatris launched initiatives that aimed at control TB incidence, nutritional support during the treatment for patients as well as improvement in diagnosis-treatment connectivity for drug-resistant TB. In the year 2023 alone, over 80,000 people were impacted positively through such endeavors, in which Viatris proved to be committed to the health outcomes and the welfare of the communities residing in India.
