Cold Conditions Set to Worsen in Delhi, IMD Issues Orange Alert

Delhi is likely to experience adverse weather from Monday, January 12. It seems that the chilling weather is going to present quite a challenge to Delhi residents on Monday. Wind blowing between 10 to 15 kmph from morning itself will make it feel like it is a cold wave condition despite it being daytime. The maximum temperature will remain around 18 degrees.

In the city, as the night goes on, the temperature is expected to drop around 4°C which is close to the lower end. The effect of the cold will be more severe with the anticipated dense fog and cold wave condition setting in. The cold winds will make people to mostly stay at home or move towards warmer places. Due to fog, the visibility on roads will be reduced and may increase road accidents. Drivers are advised to take extra care while driving.

In Delhi, throughout the morning, the cold air is likely to move from the west at a speed of up to 10 kmph. As the day progresses, the wind will change to northwest directions but with equal strengths. However, there is an expected reduction in speeds by almost half as the day progresses to nighttime, when it will again move from the west.

As per the Meteorological Department, it is expected that intense cold weather will continue to prevail in Delhi as well as in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Uttarakhand on January 12-13. These areas will face harsh cold due to cold condition. However, after Makar Sankranti on 14 January, the cold is expected to decrease.

Dense fog has covered the Terai regions of western Uttar Pradesh near Delhi today, including Shamli, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Moradabad, Bareilly, and Pilibhit. Due to this dense fog, visibility will get lower especially during morning and at night. Intensification of cold is likely to be felt on Monday over Uttar Pradesh as a fresh western disturbance has become effective. The effect will remain mainly limited to western Uttar Pradesh, while eastern parts of the state are likely to remain unaffected.
