Cold Wave Tightens Grip on Delhi, Yellow Alert Issued
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Delhi regarding cold and fog. Let’s find out what the weather in Delhi is expected to be like today.
Delhi Weather Today
Cold conditions continue to peak in the national capital, Delhi, with icy winds and dense fog causing a persistent chill since morning. Visibility has dropped in several areas, affecting normal movement. The India Meteorological Department has maintained a yellow alert for Thursday, warning of ongoing cold and foggy conditions.
Cold Day Recorded at Palam and Lodhi Road
According to the weather department, cold day conditions were observed on Wednesday at the Palam and Lodhi Road weather stations. At Palam, the maximum temperature remained around five degrees below normal, while Lodhi Road also experienced sustained cold throughout the day. Weak sunlight and cold winds ensured that daytime temperatures offered little relief.
Fog and Cold Winds Limit Sunshine
Cold wind from northwest along with thick fog in the air stopped sunlight from reaching the ground and making it warm. Due to which, visibility in several parts of the city was recorded about 600 and 800 metres. Even when the sun came out, it was too weak to ease the cold. The strong winds kept the weather cold all day.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a slight rise in temperature is possible on Thursday, but people may not get relief from the cold because fog will remain moderate to dense during morning and evening. Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to rise around 16°C on 8 January, while the minimum temperature may fall to 5°C. This cold weather is likely to continue till 12 January. Since there is no western disturbance, cold conditions may feel stronger.
What Is a Cold Day?
As per the IMD, on Wednesday, daytime temperature in Delhi stayed very low, between 13°C and 16°C. Because of this place like Palam and Lodhi Road were observed as coldest day when the minimum temperature fall below 10°C and the maximum temperature remains 4.5°C to 6.5°C below normal. When both these conditions happen together, the weather feels unusually cold even during the daytime, not just at night.
