Delhi continued to reel under hazardous air pollution on Monday, with no improvement in air quality, while thick smog disrupted daily life and delayed flights at the airport.
Air quality in Delhi was again under the same plight, with the smog unabated until well past the afternoon of Monday. It was observed that until a time past 12 PM, the general air quality did not have any improvement, with the average AQI of the National Capital remaining under the ‘very poor’ category.
Earlier, the city-wide AQI was recorded at 366 at about 7 AM, as per the Sameer app, and this has not changed much even at noon because of the lack of wind movement. Areas in Delhi are still experiencing ‘severe’ levels of air quality, with the Narela station having the highest readings at 418, which is the highest at all stations. Other stations recording ‘severe’ levels of pollution, such as Anand Vihar, Bawana, Jahangirpuri, Mundka, Rohini, and Wazirpur, are registering AQI levels of 401 to 408.
Even in regions with lower levels of pollution, the prevailing air remained unalleviated. Dilshad Garden had the worst AQI out of 40 stations in Delhi with 301, but that still categorized it in ‘Very Poor’ air.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), if the AQI is between 301 and 400, the air quality will be ‘very poor,’ and if it is between 401 and 500, it will be in the severe category. This is dangerous to one’s health; in fact, it can cause illnesses to those who do not have any medical issues like asthma in people with heart conditions.
The poor air quality and thick smog caused problems at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. Due to low visibility, airport authorities had to follow special low-visibility safety procedures. The flights were not cancelled but the poor visibility delayed more than 150 flights by Monday morning. Passengers were advised to check with their airlines for updated flight timings before they travel.
“Low visibility procedures are in progress at Delhi airport. All flight operations continue as normal. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information” the advisory given on social media X platform.
