Only 55% of Indian homes are equipped for safe electric vehicle (EV) charging, according to a study by EV charging company Kazam and the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE).

The study examined more than 80,000 residential EV charger installations across India and found that about 45% of homes required electrical upgrades or corrective work before dedicated EV chargers could be installed safely. It also found that home charging accounts for nearly 80% of EV charging in the country.

The findings point to gaps in residential electrical infrastructure as EV adoption increases. According to the study, many homes require electrical improvements before they can support EV charging systems.

Based on the findings, Kazam has launched EV-Ready Ghar, a consumer awareness campaign on home charging safety. The campaign includes an online EV Home Readiness Quiz that allows users to check whether their home's electrical system is suitable for EV charging. Consumers can also book an on-site assessment by trained technicians.

The campaign includes a music video featuring EV owners selected through an open audition process. It focuses on home charging and advises against using standard household sockets for prolonged overnight charging instead of dedicated EV charging equipment.

Kazam has also used the traditional Nimbu Mirchi symbol in the campaign to highlight electrical safety and the need to prepare residential electrical infrastructure before installing EV chargers.

Vani Vivek, Associate Vice President of Marketing at Kazam, said home charging is an important part of EV ownership but receives less attention than other aspects of electric mobility. She said the campaign is intended to help consumers understand whether their homes are suitable for EV charging and what steps may be needed before installing a charger.

India's electric vehicle market has expanded in recent years, supported by government incentives, new vehicle launches and the growth of charging infrastructure. Home charging remains the primary method used by EV owners.

The study says improving residential electrical infrastructure will be necessary as the number of electric vehicles and home charging installations continues to increase.
