DHL Takes Flight with Sustainable Fuel: 7.2M Litre SAF Deal with Cosmo

Partnership agreement: DHL Express, Cosmo Oil Join to Launch Japan's First SAF Supply to DHL's Cargo Operations there
DHL Express will start using sustainable aviation fuel in its operations in Japan as part of an agreement announced today. It is the first time a global express service provider has purchased and supplied SAF to fly scheduled cargo flights in Asia.
Deal terms

Under the agreement, Cosmo Oil agreed to supply 7.2 million liters of SAF per annum from April 2025 to DHL Express. It is going to be used for carrying DHL air cargo in Japan, which will be the first in Asia to start using more than 500 airports on the DHL side.
The company, Cosmo Oil, through its subsidiary, Saffaire Sky Energy, will manufacture SAF at the newly constructed plant, which is expected to come on stream in 2025. Thus, the partnership has reconfirmed that DHL reduces carbon footprint in their logistics and airfreight business.

Role of SAF in Emission Reduction

The most viable alternative for reducing carbon emissions in air transport today is sustainable aviation fuel. This fuel is produced from renewable sources and cuts lifecycle carbon emissions by half compared to traditional jet fuel. DHL's move into SAF aligns with its broader environmental objectives and is part of global decarbonization efforts in aviation.
Strategic Impact on the Aviation Industry

This in turn opens more sustainable commitment from Japan towards a greener logistics area while it keeps fueling the pursuit of cleaner alternatives for fuel across the country. DHL Express reduced emissions by utilizing locally produced SAF and set precedence for others working in logistics and aviation.
This example of a partnership between DHL and Cosmo Oil rising in numbers demonstrates the increasingly growing importance of SAF in achieving emission reduction goals for the transport sector. The burden on the aviation industry is more significant, as it is required to be greener, furthermore developing more environmentally friendly technology; this kind of cooperation will thus pave the way toward a more sustainable future for air logistics.

Conclusion

DHL Express is currently following through on its long-term sustainability strategy of finding solutions to reduce the environment footprint without any loss of efficiency in the global logistics offered. This contributes to the successes realized towards achieving sustainability, in this case, by having introduced SAFs into DHL Express Japan's operations.
Cosmo Oil will continue to develop and expand production of SAF to support industry take-up. The company finds that this agreement is consistent with the concept of realizing a decarbonized society through alternative fuel.
