Himachal Pradesh CM reviewed the 450 MW Kinnaur hydro project, now 75% complete, and directed faster execution to meet energy and infrastructure goals.
Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has visited the Shongtong–Karcham hydroelectric project of 450 MW in Kinnaur and directed officials to expedite construction work, sticking to the completion deadlines, as reported recently.
This project is approximately 75% completed and expected to yield a yearly generation capacity of 1,579 million units. Also, the project will contribute about ₹900 crore each year to the economy of the state.
During the visit, the Chief Minister personally checked various vital installations such as the powerhouse, barrage, and surge shaft. Besides, he discussed with engineers and labourers working at the site. During the meeting, he asked all concerned departments to complete the first phase of the project by January 2027.
The Shongtong–Karcham project is part of the state’s broader strategy to strengthen hydropower capacity and reduce seasonal dependence on electricity purchases. Despite being energy-surplus, Himachal Pradesh faces power shortages during the winter months, prompting the government to prioritise the faster execution of ongoing energy projects.
Officials stated that civil works, including the barrage and headrace tunnel, are at an advanced stage of development, while electro-mechanical works are progressing in stages. Also, there is increased monitoring and planning in place from the side of the state government to address any technical and logistical challenges that were causing the delay in the project earlier.
Hydropower plant development is a decade-long process, and according to recent reviews, there is an inclination on the part of the government authorities to speed up the development process owing to increasing demands for energy and policy changes due to climate change.
This review is a part of the overall initiatives taken by the state government to optimise infrastructure development activities and energy security needs. The role of hydropower in the state's renewable energy policy framework is vital, taking into account the geography and rivers of the region.
Although the Shongtong-Karcham hydroelectric project is estimated to greatly increase generation capacity, problems with infrastructure, such as geographical hindrances and delays with implementation, remain. The state has been keen on putting in place strict measures for monitoring and gradual implementation to deal with these constraints.
After coming into use, the Shongtong-Karcham hydroelectric project will be crucial to power stability in the state.
