IISc Firm's Innovation Tackles Energy Storage Challenges

Voltanova Deploys Thermal Energy Storage Technology in Textile Mill
Bengaluru-headquartered deep-tech company Voltanova has made giant strides in the area of renewable energy with its new thermal energy storage technology deployed at a textile mill. It has been developed to make the utilization of renewable energy feasible in industry, and this is a de-carbonisation breakthrough in heavy industries.
Voltanova, incubated at the Indian Institute of Science's Foundation of Science, Innovation, and Development, has developed a high-efficiency thermal energy storage system. The 100% carbon-free industrial energy technology is ten times cheaper than the current storage technology. The storage solution is 95% efficient and can convert renewable energy into high-temperature industrial power and heat and make fossil fuels redundant.
The technology was first used industrially by the company's business venture with RMP Group, a business corporation having textile manufacturing units at Panipat and Faridabad. The thermal storage system is best applicable to energy-intensive industries such as steel, cement, textiles, food and beverages, chemicals, and paper where there is a necessity for continuous flow of energy to ensure smooth operation.
Voltanova's thermal energy storage is for multi-day storage, which allows for uninterrupted 24/7 operation. This is very important in high and constant energy-demanding industries, where they can minimize reliance on unpredictable grid power or fossil fuel-derived energy inputs. Storage and release of thermal energy in this way provide a scalable solution to supply high-demanding industrial processes continuously.
The transition to renewable energy for industrial purposes is becoming more of a requirement as industries account for almost 30-40% of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. With the world's increasing imperatives calling for industrial processes to be decarbonized, options such as Voltanova's thermal storage solution offer an appealing path towards achieving climate goals in addition to lowering operational expenses.
The technology also offers a much-needed substitute for traditional thermal energy storage systems, which are usually expensive and inefficient. Voltanova's technology offers an economical means of enabling industries to tap renewable energy in their operations, reducing both carbon footprint and operational costs in the long run.
The association with RMP Group indicates high relevance in the textile sector in India, which over the years had been unable to fulfill energy efficiency and sustainability needs. With embracement of the clean energy regime, the textile sector will be in a position to reduce carbon footprints as it deals with mounting environmental issues through regulatory measures.
The more sophisticated renewable energy becomes, the greater the need for improved storage systems to be able to harness and tap energy from solar and wind power to be used efficiently for high-temperature processes that companies need. Voltanova's thermal energy storage system is a move towards making such a possibility a reality, and its partnership with RMP Group is a major step towards cleaner production processes.
The technology has broader applications outside the textile industry. Voltanova's technology also has applications in other industries like steel, cement, and chemicals, which are some of the biggest consumers of energy in the industrial industry. With a secure, carbon-free source of power, the thermal energy storage system can help these industries meet their sustainability targets and reduce their overall energy cost.
In the long term, Voltanova's thermal energy storage technology has the potential to become a game changer in reshaping India's industrial energy landscape and worldwide. While industries strive to be environmentally friendly without compromising on productivity, such new energy technologies may provide the scalability and consistency to achieve sustainable growth.
While the world is grappling with added pressure to combat climate change, Voltanova's new technology is the blueprint to follow for the development of industrial energy systems in the future. Voltanova not only provides the energy solutions that the world is currently demanding but also charts the course of industry to become an extension of nature.
