IKEA launches electric heavy trucks in Italy to cut freight emissions and advance cleaner, zero-emission logistics.
IKEA has blazoned a major step toward decarbonizing its logistics operations in Italy with the launch of a completely galvanized heavy road transport design. The action, developed in cooperation with Daimler Truck Italia and logistics provider LC3 Trasporti, aims to significantly cut emissions from road freight while advancing a more sustainable logistics ecosystem. The design aligns with IKEA’s broader climate strategy and focuses on reducing carbon emissions, promoting electric heavy-duty exchanges, enabling sustainable logistics, supporting zero-emission transport, and strengthening decarbonized shipping across crucial Italian transport routes.
The new program marks a shift in how large-scale retail logistics can operate in Europe, particularly in high-impact sectors similar to vessel transport and store deliveries. By integrating electric freight vehicles into diurnal operations, IKEA is situating itself at the van of the transition to low-carbon road transport, while also demonstrating the marketable viability of electric exchanges for long-distance and high-frequency logistics use.
Phased Deployment of Electric Freight Vehicles
The galvanized transport design will be rolled out in phases, beginning with the preface of two battery electric vehicles. Over time, the line will expand to further than ten Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 electric exchanges by the third quarter of 2026. These vehicles will be used for diurnal vessel transport services between the anchorages of Genoa and La Spezia, two of Italy’s most important maritime capitals, as well as for regular deliveries to IKEA stores.

Reducing Emigrations Across Italy’s Transport Network
The action is listed to begin operations in October 2026 and is anticipated to play a major part in reducing IKEA’s transportation-related emigrations in Italy. Once completely functional, the electric truck line is projected to enable more than 1.2 million kilometers of zero-emission trips annually.
According to IKEA, this shift will fully exclude CO₂ emissions from the covered road freight routes while also significantly reducing noise pollution and perfecting air quality in civic and port areas. The design is anticipated to have a meaningful impact on the environmental footprint of IKEA’s functional conditioning, particularly in regions with high logistics business.
