India Rises to 9th Place Globally in Forest Area: FAO

India has climbed one spot to become the country with the ninth-largest forest area in the world, according to the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025 released by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Bali.

Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav posted on his social media page: Here is a reason to rejoice for all Indians. We have achieved 9th rank in terms of forest area at the global level as compared to 10th spot in the previous assessment. We have also maintained our 3rd position globally in terms of annual gain.

He said, 'The achievement comes on the back of Modi government's planning and policies for the protection and enhancement of the forest and massive plantation efforts by State Governments. PM Shri @narendramodi ji’s call to plant 'Ek Ped Ma ke Naam', and push for environmental consciousness, are building awareness and increasing involvement of communities and individuals for afforestation. This will ensure a greener tomorrow for generations to come.

The minister stated the growth comes from a mix of government planning, state-level plantation drives, and public participation encouraged by initiatives such as ‘Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam’, which urges every citizen to plant a tree. “PM Modi’s call to plant 'Ek Ped Ma ke Naam', and push for environmental consciousness, is building awareness and increasing involvement of communities and individuals for afforestation. This will ensure a greener tomorrow for generations to come.”

This growing public participation is fostering a strong sense of collective responsibility towards a greener and sustainable future. The achievement comes on the back of the Modi government's planning and policies for protection and enhancement of the forest and massive plantation efforts by State Governments, the Minister stated.
