Monsoon Hits Delhi-NCR With Heavy Rain; Orange Alert Issued

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for rain in Delhi today. Let’s look at what the weather is expected to be like.

Monsoon Hits Delhi-NCR With Heavy Rain; Orange Alert Issued

Delhiites have finally got relief from hot and humid weather as the weather changed last night. People of Delhi and surrounding areas woke up with cool winds and pleasant morning, giving the city its first proper feel of the monsoon after almost two hot and dry weeks.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the rain is expected to stay for at least few more days. Earlier yellow alert has been issued by IMD, soon it escalated to an orange alert, as heavy rain, gusty winds, and light thunderstorms spread across Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad.

This weather shift isn’t random. IMD officials explained that the monsoon trough has moved northward, setting up favourable conditions for widespread rainfall. The system is pulling in moisture from the Arabian Sea, fuelling the downpours. On top of that, a Western Disturbance is approaching, likely to trigger more intense showers and thunderstorm activity in the coming days.

While the rain brought welcome relief, it also led to typical monsoon chaos. Several areas of the capital saw severe waterlogging, leading to traffic snarls during the morning rush. In Sangam Vihar, for instance, MB Road was completely flooded, causing long delays for officegoers. Frustrated commuters were quick to point fingers at the city’s poor drainage infrastructure.

The IMD forecast says Delhi-NCR can expect light to moderate showers to continue until July 12. After weeks of heat and patchy rainfall, the monsoon finally seems to be settling in offering much-needed comfort, but also reminding the city of its annual struggle with rain-related disruptions.
