Johnson Controls Heat Pumps Slash Customer Costs by 53%, Cut Emissions 60% in 2024

Across hospitals, factories, schools, and city buildings, Johnson Controls’ commercial heat pumps are quietly reshaping how the world stays warm—saving money and helping the planet. In 2024, the company helped customers slash heating expenses by 53% and reduce carbon emissions by 60%, compared to conventional gas boilers.

Katie McGinty, Johnson Controls’ Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer, says it’s about more than just technology. “We’re working shoulder-to-shoulder with our customers,” she says. “Our heat pumps are not only cutting energy bills in half, they’re delivering real climate action—today, not in the distant future.”

With energy costs and environmental concerns rising, heat pumps are gaining momentum as a cleaner alternative. Industry groups estimate that they could replace most industrial boilers in the US by 2050—and power over 60% of Europe’s industrial heating needs.

The numbers are already speaking for themselves. In Spain, one food company is saving €1.5 million a year and cutting 2,000 tonnes of CO₂ by installing heat pumps in two factories. A hospital in Germany tapped heat energy buried 200 meters below its campus and now meets 80% of its heating needs with 30% less energy cost. In the U.S., Children’s Hospital of Alabama saved $680,000 annually by cutting its gas use by 69%.

And cities are getting on board too. In Hamburg, Germany, four large heat pumps will soon pull warmth from treated wastewater to heat 39,000 homes. In the UK, Hounslow Council replaced gas boilers in 60 public buildings with Johnson Controls heat pumps, halving both energy costs and emissions.

Johnson Controls has long been a leader in heat pump technology and now offers one of the world’s most extensive commercial portfolios. The company is also moving toward environmentally friendly refrigerants—ensuring the benefits go beyond savings to long-term climate impact.

In a world demanding smarter, cleaner energy solutions, Johnson Controls’ heat pumps are proving that sustainability and business advantage can go hand in hand.
