LEGO Pledges DKK 19 Million to Fight Climate Change

The LEGO Group invests DKK 19 million in carbon removal.
The LEGO Group reported having invested DKK 19 million in four carbon removal projects, and the area where its initiative goes further into more holistic efforts for sustainability is in developing carbon removal concepts. That is more than one direct operation related to its business activities. It is working with Climate Impact Partners as well as ClimeFi and it should be able to provide carbon credits from 2024 through to 2026.
The parent company, KIRKBI has pledged DKK 5 million to the causes and thus delivers on its obligations to the environment.

Main Strategies of Carbon Removal by LEGO
LEGO invests in the following three significant carbon removal strategies and restoration:
1. Biochar Technology

Biochar is created by burning the waste plant in a controlled environment; hence carbon dioxide does not get into the atmosphere. Biochar also makes the soil fertile, thus, agriculture sustainable for many years.
2. Fast Weathering of Rocks

This is through the covering of agricultural land with finely pulverized rock powder for the acceleration of natural weathering. This increases the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and its storage in the soil in the mineral form, thus improving soil quality.

3. Reforestation in the USA

Massive reforestation programs started in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, USA by LEGO. Revival of more than 40,000 hectares of this forest with improvement of biodiversity and water quality while improving better flood warning provisions also in this area have been its positive impact and outcome.
Short-term and long-term Impact or Future Sustainability for this activity It has huge impacts on the environment: carbon sequestration, better fertility of the soil, and restoring ecosystems. In that regard, LEGO invests in the emerging nature-based solutions that mitigate broader impacts on the environment. In this respect, this investment comfortably falls within the overall sustainability of LEGO, reducing carbon emissions and conserving the environment far beyond the supply chain of the organization. The company is constantly creating new ideas in which to be a contributor for a sustainable future.
