Mahanagar Gas Introduces PNG Meter Reading via WhatsApp
Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) now allows domestic customers to submit their PNG meter readings via WhatsApp, alongside existing options like app, SMS, email, and website. The service aims to enhance convenience and billing accuracy. MGL supplies CNG and PNG across Mumbai, Raigad, and adjoining areas through a vast network.
Mumbai, 2nd July, 2025 – India's second-largest city gas distribution player, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), has introduced a new digital facility whereby household consumers can send their PNG meter readings on WhatsApp. The service is meant to make the billing process simpler and more convenient and user-friendly for household PNG consumers.
Customers can send a picture of their meter along with 8-digit meter reading and meter number through MGL's official WhatsApp number. The procedure is a part of MGL's digital approach to ensure easy and smooth customer interaction, allowing for timely and accurate billing.
Customers are asked to check the blue check verification mark on MGL's official WhatsApp number before providing any information, so that the interaction is safe and authentic.
In addition to WhatsApp, MGL also facilitates some platforms to input the meter reading. These are uploading the photo of the meter using the MGL Connect mobile app, sending an SMS with pre-determined BP number and meter reading to 9223555557, emailing the photo and reading to [email protected], or logging in to the official website of the company www.mahanagargas.com and typing in the meter reading manually. Customers can also send the readings via Customer Care numbers (022) 6867 4500 or (022) 6156 4500.
MGL has also requested its customers to update their mobile number and email id by contacting customer care, so that digital service communication is carried out smoothly and updates are carried out on time.
The WhatsApp facility is designed in such a way as to improve convenience and accuracy for customers, minimizing the need for physical visits and manual picking up of reading and quicker bill generation. The service will benefit substantially from customers making use of digital media for transactions in their daily lives.
MGL, marketing company of GAIL (India) Ltd, has been in existence for more than three decades and is the exclusive mandated sale agent of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for Mumbai city and suburbs, including Raigad district. It delivers gas to more than 28 lakh residential and more than 5100 small industrial and commercial establishments.
Apart from residential and commercial customers, MGL also fuels CNG to more than 11 lakh vehicles, including almost 4.5 lakh rickshaws, 1.5 lakh taxis, and almost 4.8 lakh private cars in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The company fuels almost 2000 buses owned by BEST, TMT, MSRTC, and NMMT, and almost 43,700 other such vehicles like tempos, trucks, and private buses.
The firm possesses a huge infrastructure in the form of a distribution network of more than 7500 kilometres of steel and MDPE pipelines and 385 CNG fuel filling stations with more than 2370 dispensing points. This huge network facilitates the sustained efforts of MGL to distribute clean energy solutions in Maharashtra.
