MRPL Wins Greentech Environment Award 2025

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL) has added another feather to its cap by securing the prestigious ‘24th Global Greentech Environment & Sustainability Summit Award 2025’ in the Environment Protection category. The award, conferred by the Greentech Foundation, recognizes the organisation’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and its efforts in significantly minimising its ecological footprint.

The award ceremony took place in New Delhi and saw representation from various esteemed organisations working in the domain of environment, sustainability, and corporate social responsibility. Representing MRPL at the ceremony were General Managers Prasanna Kumar T. and Nirankar Singh, who received the award on behalf of the entire team. The recognition is not just a mark of MRPL’s progress in greening its operations, but also an affirmation of its consistent alignment with national and global environmental goals.

A wholly owned subsidiary of ONGC, MRPL has over the years become synonymous with innovation, responsibility, and sustainable industrial growth. The company has adopted and integrated a variety of innovative solutions aimed at reducing its environmental impact, optimising resource use, and aligning its operations with best-in-class sustainability benchmarks.

One of the flagship initiatives that played a critical role in MRPL receiving this award is its use of RLNG (Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas) as a cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuel alternative. By transitioning towards RLNG, MRPL has successfully reduced its dependence on more polluting fuel sources, thereby lowering greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to cleaner air in and around its operational zones.

Another milestone project is the installation of an in-house developed de-odour unit at the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP). This system was specifically designed to manage and eliminate odorous emissions from the ETP, which traditionally has been a source of unpleasant smells and airborne pollutants in many refineries. The development and successful implementation of such a unit highlight MRPL’s capability to innovate in-house and create context-specific solutions that are both effective and sustainable.

In its continuous journey to go beyond regulatory compliance, MRPL has also installed a wet gas scrubber system to further reduce particulate matter emissions. These scrubbers are part of MRPL’s broader strategy to adopt preventive environmental management techniques rather than reactive approaches. By proactively introducing technologies that curb emissions, MRPL demonstrates that industrial growth and environmental stewardship can indeed go hand in hand.

The company’s approach to water management is equally noteworthy. Recognising the importance of conserving freshwater, MRPL has embarked on an initiative to utilise treated city sewage water for its refinery operations. This not only eases the pressure on freshwater sources but also ensures that waste water from urban centres is put to effective industrial use, thereby supporting circular economy principles.

Another remarkable achievement of MRPL is the utilisation of oily sludge from the ETP in its Delayed Coker Unit (DCU). Typically considered hazardous waste, oily sludge poses significant challenges in disposal and environmental risk. However, MRPL has successfully repurposed this waste by feeding it into the DCU, where it is transformed into useful by-products. This initiative not only addresses the issue of waste disposal but also contributes to resource efficiency and cost optimisation.

Speaking on the recognition, a company spokesperson emphasised that MRPL’s focus has always been on striking a balance between business excellence and environmental performance.
